Temporarily pimping out my Tron

I'm still having some trouble understanding why people would do this. The owner is offering for you to bring your machine into HIS establishment, leave it unattended, and like you said, have it run 10-12 hours with possibly power surges sent to it etc etc, and all you get out of this is, whatever ends up in the COIN BOX?? You have totally just made his life a piece of cake.

I would have asked for at least $100 from him plus whatever lands in the basket (which could potentially end up being like 5 bucks). And I feel like that's still an underestimation. But hey, that's just me.

I think as long as the shop owner pays for the permit/tax sticker (if that issue even arises) then Chris is going to do really good.

In Texas it isn't that simple but maybe some places don't require state/local stickers or operator license anymore. :)

I don't know how Minnesota regulates coin-op amusement devices. I think the Tron will make some decent money.

I wonder if they have any length-of-operation loopholes, since it'll just be used for a short time, it'd be OK? I have no idea. Probably not.

All I can say is, Chris, do not post the name of this place, or this could end up real Sundancey... If you catch my drift.

good luck, chris. i bet you'll make some good dough on it, especially at .25 a play. this is definitely a good time to be putting it on location.

And also... With the thread title... I think "Bling on a Tron."

Technically, you're whoring out the Tron. You're the pimp, the poor Tron is about to be handled in ways that a wholesome machine shouldn't be!

All arcade games are 'pleasure units' made just for that type of handling. :)

I was at a local pizza shop tonight that had several games and i couldn't help but notice the steady stream of people pumping money into these things. A while back i had given the owner an empty cabinet for a crazy project and i went in to see how it turned out. He had a friend run an inkjet tapper marquee an a couple of beer salesman were gonna turn this thing into a beer tap station. It isn't quite done yet so i'll have to post a pic next time i'm there.

So we chat for a while and he asked me about my Tron machine and wondered if i'd be interested in renting it out for the month of january. I told him that the one he saw when he was at my place was actually sold but i now have another that's complete and working that i didn't care much about and what the hell, if it bring you some publicity you can have it for a month. The best part of the story for me is that he offered up all the money it makes for the month. He does a fair amount of advertising and holds high score tournaments for free food so that may explain the large crowd that was gathered tonight.

This machine is all original inside right down to the caps on the monitor so i'm gonna have to freshen it up a bit and cross my fingers that it can stand a months worth of running 10-12 hours a day. The monitor is already burnt to hell so i don't care about that but the board and power supply have me a bit nervous so i'm gonna toss in a temporary fan and hope for the best. The coin counter is still working and reading 64060 so we'll see what kind of play this thing gets.

I love that place. Some of those conversions from Mendota Valley in there make the eyes bleed, but they play. Even the wife loves to go there for Gilligan's Island pinball. I saw that Tapper behind the counter and wondered what the hell that was for too. :) You can count on some quarters from me, I'll play Tron for sure.

Soooooo one way to get a generous price would probably be to put the EDOT on Ebay the week before Christmas right after the movie releases.

Naaa.. to valuable to me.

but not invaluable. ;)

Contrary to popular belief the week before xmas isn't a magical time to list hard to find items on ebay, November pounds ebay way harder.
When I was selling Nintendo nes's on ebay still a few years ago, through out the year 99% of the time I would just run 24 hr auctions, one penny starting bid, I made money hand over fist this way, $135 bucks a pop for a nes with mario 1 2 3 and dr mario. At this time other guys were lucky to get $90 maybe buy it now even!
Mine were All refurbed to a point that not one else could top.
No blinking screens garunteed with my system/games no sticky buttons, top dollar for premium product!
Any ways my point is. The highest I ever got running this same auction over and over was like $315, like November 20th.
Needless to say, when i saw that auction end I threw some but it now ones up for like $250, sold a handfull more that way LOL
I was rolling in the dough boy.
Ebay liked me :p so did my at the time wife, paypal, and usps/ups/dhl.

Ahahah

I was hoping the name of the place wouldn't come up, because now you know that some KLOV douchebag is going to call the branch of government that charges for the permits for something like this, and narc Chris out... Another Sundance type douchey escapade.

I would hope not. All the games in there are licensed through Mendota Valley. There wouldn't be any reason for anyone else to think otherwise that went there and who knows if and when the game will show up. I'll edit out the post, I just wanted any other local MN guys to know where the game was so they could support it.

With Tron coming out I bet you'll make...

ONE MILLION DOLLARS!

Did you guys really think I would drop this in a high profile place without making sure my ass was covered on the state level? Here's how it's all gonna work:

there are already several machines in this place that are licensed through the operator that put em there. The owner of the pizza shop does a monthly feature game that can be one of his own or one that the op has. The op has an agreement with the owner that if he chooses to place his own game there as the feature, they will take it on under their license for up to six weeks. They won,t maintain it (works for me, I've seen their work) but it's covered. For their generosity, the owner takes the hit on taxes paid to the state via a decrease in his cut of all arcade profits for the duration of time the game sits there.

We want a full report card on how it is performing by tomorrow night Saturday 12-18!. :p

Any update on this? I'm friends with the owner of a local pizza shop, and I've often though about "storing" some games there (like the 6 player X-men I almost bought that won't fit into my game room)

The game was placed a couple weeks early for the release of the movie. I was there over the weekend to check in and have a look at the coin counts. It had been there for less than two days but there was about $35 in the bucket. The game will be featured at his place during the month of january and he has some tournaments set up as well as some other promotions so that's when it should see the most attention. I'll update this post every once in a while and i'll also post a final coin count at the end of january.

Would love to see some pics of it back "In the wild" :)

I can take a pic of it. I was going to when I was there just for fun. I played a few games on it for old time sake. I think the microswitch for the trigger is a little iffy, either that or the game just doesn't fire as rapidly as I remember it. I spoke with the owner about you and the game when I was in there. We both commented on how we thought the game was in pretty good shape, but that you would think it looked like garbage. ;)

$35 for only 2 days sounds pretty good to me. Hopefully the cash box fills up even more with the promotion stuff.

Yep it survived but personally, I haven't experienced a windfall of cash in the coin bucket considering all the publicity this game was given. There's a couple weeks to go and I'll post the final results
