After many months, the Tempest is alive again!

However - its not without its faults that I wanna run past the more knowledgeable members of the group before messing too much.

So, the tube is currently only displaying red and blue, and the colors seem "offset" a little. Pics should demonstrate. So I am missing green, and of course the mixed colors (white, purple, cyan etc). Thats the main problem. I was told maybe I need to dial in the neckboard potentiometers - would this be the likely cause? If so - which adjustments control which colors? And how do I adjust these? Do I need a specific tool to avoid wobbling the board?

Finally, I noticed the vectors don't seem to join well at the ends (when you complete a level the web lines are way off as is zooms towards you). They also bend/warp at the base of the screen as then go off the edges.

So - I am getting there - can anyone point me in the right direction to get over the final hurdle?

Thanks!

You've got a few little problems.

The lines not linking up at their endpoints is an adjustment on the PCB. Tinker with the X-BIP and Y-BIP to line them up. There is a grid test screen to help.

The 'shadowed' lines, like around the level selection box are due to your convergence needing adjustment. Unless it's horrible, you shouldn't mess with it. Plenty of writeups on how to address it with the purity rings and/or correction magnets.

You're definitely missing green. You need to isolate whether it's missing from the PCB or the monitor. I would swap the green pin with either the red or blue on the input connector where the gameboard harness meets with the monitor frame.

1- if green appears and blue or red disappear, you're not getting signal from the PCB.

2- If you still have only blue and red, but swapped with where the green text/graphics should appear, you are losing it somewhere on your monitor boards.

good luck/report back

I realised I would need to adjust convergence etc - its pretty bad, probably out by, say, 3 or 4 mm on screen.

The chasis was just shopped at arcadecup so I believe it to be in tip top order now. I am guessing its a board issue (unfortunately that was serviced several months ago too but I couldnt check it). I checked continuity on the green pin to gameboard and thats good.

Can I scope the green to see if I am getting anything at the edge connector? if so - how? I have a scope but never used it yet :)

Sure you can scope it out!

Set your oscilloscope to DC, your volts/division to 1V or .5V, adjust your trace about 3/4 down the screen with the position knob.

Hook the ground to a board ground. Use an alligator clip to clip onto some point on the board where the R/G/B signals are or stick a paperclip into the connector end and clip on to that (low tech..).

You should see some color activity on every screen. You can adjust the V/div or the timebase setting as you see fit. Maybe 1ms/division. Check out the red and blue first so you'll know what you're looking for. Green should appear similar.

I'll bet you have green at the PCB, but a bad transistor on the neckboard or something.
