I just received my working (finally!) Tempest boardset in the mail today. I haven't been able to test out the 6100 deflection board I bought from XY4u properly till now, since my other boardsets have been nonworking (and have came up with a single dot on the screen till now). I went home for lunch for a few minutes, plugged up the new board and as soon as I turned it on, it came up...sort of. The screen was collapsed into a vertical line about 2-3 inches wide, yet you can clearly see the screens changing from one to another for attract mode (even if you can't readily make out anything).

Is there some sort of vertical width adjustment somewhere, or is this problem indicative of something else?

Quick update:

Just got home from work and decided to be proactive and delve into the problem a bit more. After finding and adjusting the XY controls on the board itself, I was able to come up with a jiggly screen that was converging from wide on the left to narrow in the center. After playing with the adjustments, this is the best I could muster...

After switching the game to Test mode, here's what came up...

Any ideas?

If the game board is truly working, then it means the deflection board in your monitor isn't (working, or hooked up right). Do you have a multimeter or oscilloscope or other vector game?

just a thought,(looks like the problem i had)check your voltages. my 5volt was at 9.0 on the ar board. ajusted it back to 5 and problem solved. maybe?
