Thanks to forum member Talon2000, my Tempest boardset is doing its thing. He was a pleasure to work with.

In keeping with my Tempest's theme, apparently work needs to be done on every part, from transformer on up. We've reached the opto board on the spinner. Opto appears to be dead, since its gettings its 5V and putting out nada when interrupted. I cleaned it, tried viewing it through an IR sensitive camera (nothing), etc.

Been doing some extensive reading, but unclear to me what the best solution is. The best replacement opto parts seem to be a farichild part (H22a1) that is no longer available.

Suggestions? Can I just pick up a trackball sensor from Bob Roberts, and switch up the wiring?

Can you try pointing a remote control at the sensor and see if you get a signal at all? If so, then I'd wonder if you could just replace the IR led side of it. Having said this I haven't seen one up close but I know some are just plastic housings with the led inside.

FYI I know most VCRs use an IR led in the center of the tape mechanism, and of course any old junk remote control have IR led's as well.

I suppose, but I'm still at my first machine. No doubt others will join it, but I have not reached the 499 spares level of obsession.

Can the Happ trackball optics be substituted? I see them from several vendors.

Seems like a few folks around the web have subbed two of the H22a1's. But Fairchild obsoleted them. Thanks to Orion3311, was turned on to an ebay vendor for the H22A1. Will l et everyone know if it is a) functional and b) a replacement part that might be more generally available.

Thanks.

I have some replacement optios that work. Unfortunately I'm on a business trip until December and can't remember the part numbers on them. Something like 1394 or the like. I got them at a electronics surplus place, and basically did the trial and error thing till I found a set that worked correctly. If you don't get a replacement before then, send me a PM to remind me and I'll send you a pair.

Ok so if the H22A1 is a sub,

Then these should also work

H22A2
H22A3
OPB804
QVA11234
EE-SJ3
EE-Sj5
EE-SX1041
EE-SX1025

There will be some slight differences in slot size, but it shouldn't be enough to really affect it.

I have a ton of the H22A1 sensors. 8 for $10 shipped if anyone needs them.
