Tempest spinner not working properly. Won't go one way at all and the other way is intermittent. I checked all wiring and also the optic board in another cab (pole position).

Guess it's a board issue. Anyone have a quick time saving answer before I start digging through schematics?

Thanks in advance!

:)

update, progress sort of.

Since there are 2 pokey's on the Tempest board I swapped them out and no change so it's not the pokey.

Since the wiring, optic and pokey are now all tested good and I can get the spinner to run in 1 direction in test mode (counts up not down) I am pretty sure the issue is in the clock line - CLK1 pin H.

On to looking at in order:

D6 - LS157
C6 - LS74
A4 - LS191

Any of you have a clue which one of the above would be the culprit?

argh still no good.

Ok so far:

1. Put 2 brand new edge connectors to replace the hacked up mess that was there before. Triple checked it all and fired it up. Like before, everything works but the spinner

on to the board:

2. Changed 1 at a time: D6 74LS157, C6LS74, A4 LS191. No changes with any of them. Spinner still reads in one direction in test mode - counting up.

3. Swapped the pokey's again just in case and still no help.

What am I missing here?

- If the wiring was no good I doubt the spinner would move at all let along consistently up
- The encoder/optics tested fine in my PPII

help?

Can't hurt to check continuity from each pin on the optic board to where it has to go on the edge connector, and if those are good, from the edge connector to where the signals go on each chip (in case a trace got damaged).

Also check the plugs on both the optic pcb and edge connector for bent/damaged pins.

yep but...progress!

Thanks Jeff. I had already checked the lines. Guess what though -I got it working. I decided to go back and triple-check the optic board in my PPII. It still came up as working. I then took the PPII optic and tried it in Tempest...

Now here is the part everyone should pay attention too regarding the Atari Optic boards:

While the 2 Atari optic board variations (with a chip and without a chip) will work 100% in all versions of Pole Position I/II/Upright/Cockpit, the only one that will work in a Tempest is the version WITHOUT a chip!

I hope this helps everyone!
