I also have a problem with the sound on my Tempest - I only have 2 options - Maximum volume (too loud) or no sound at all when turning the volume pot.

The sound cuts out right about half way when turning the volume knob down and full volume kicks in around 3/4 around when turning it up and just stays at a blaring volume.

Do I just need to replace the volume pot to fix this and have control over the volume? Do you guys have any sources for this part, if so?

Thanks!

Does anyone know where to get a replacement? I'm not having any luck in searching on the Atari part number 19-9032, and I would assume that there is something else out there that would work in place of the original...but I'm not sure exactly what I should be looking for.

Thanks Talon.

The replacement is more expensive than I thought it would be....

I was thinking a volume control would be 10 bucks or so.

Silly me.

I've been looking at parts on Fry's website for the volume pot replacement.

Can anyone tell me if one of the links below would work as a replacement volume pot for Tempest? They are all 50k, but then there is standard vs. miniature, 16mm vs 24mm, with and without a combo switch (whatever that is).

I am confused.

Thanks for the help!

Those links you sent (at least the first couple) are pots - Atari used a rheostat which is just a higher current rated pot, because its actually right on the speaker line and not just adjusting the audio signal.

If that were me...I would verify the pot/rheostat is bad first with a meter, make sure a wire didn't break off, and/or check the ARII board at that 4 pin speaker connector to see if it has any cold solder points.

If you happen to have a nicer digital meter like a Fluke that has the little scroll bar across the bottom of the display, hook one lead up to the middle, the other lead up to either side, then turn the pot one way or the other. You should see a smooth increase/decrease on the slider. If it jumps around or goes dead at a certain spot, then its prob dead, however it may stop at about middle when the wiper swings to the opposite lead. Make sense?

I think I'm still amazed that you can actually buy a rheostat like that!

Well your first problem is those are 50kohm pots, and not 50ohm That's 50000 Ohms vs 50 ohms

Thanks guys....Yeah...all this electronic mumbo jumbo confuses me!!! :D I don't know what I'm doing exactly.

I'm gonna send you a PM, orion. That sounds like my best course of action to get the correct replacement and not blow anything up.

:)

I thought I'd just wrap this one up....I kinda hate threads where the OP never returns and so you don't know what happened...if it got fixed...what the problem was...etc.

So I got a replacement volume control from orion3311, and had the chance to do a quickie splice job last night to test it out.

The replacement works like a charm, and so the old volume control just didn't work as I suspected. I'll break out the soldering iron at some point and seal the deal.

So there you have it.

I can now have sound on the Tempest without pissing off my wife. It kinda sucked playing with no sound at all. :(

Life is good in Tempest land.

Thanks orion3311!!!!!!

Very cool, glad to hear you got it working! Tempest without sound is like....well, you guys can probably fill in the blank better than I can!
