I just recently aquired a non-working Tempest, and I was a bit alarmed to see what I would consider really bad screen burn, as well as the black areas in the center. Is this just really bad burn, or is this common on color vectors? I've never owned a Tempest (or any color vector for that matter), so I have nothing to compare it to. The picture actually makes it look better than it really is. The monitor is a K6100, and I'm not even sure that it works - when I opened the cab, everything was completely unplugged, the AR II board was missing, and someone had replaced the big blue with a "small gray". I should have an AR board by next week and then I can at least try to power it up, but I'm not holding my breath...

Im beginning to think the vector tubes had that pre masked on them from the factory.. I think I have one out of 6 I owned that didnt have the tempest triangle on it.

All the vectors are drawn in relation to the center. Certain failures cause it to collapse to a dot in the center. The monitor has a spot-killer circuit to shut it down to keep it from burning a nice black spot in the center, but sometimes it doesn't work or people crank up the brightness to see what's wrong and end up defeating the purpose of the spot-killer.

With the dark glass on, you'll never notice the burn...

Thanks Mod - and everyone else. I was just concerned since the burn on the other parts of the tube (the Tempest logo, for example) is quite noticeable but not completely black like the spot near the center. I guess I lucked out with my Asteroids Deluxe, as it has very little burn and no spots.

When you hook up the ARII board I sent you and power it up, make sure that there isn't a bright white dot in the middle of the screen. If there is, you will continue to burn off phosphorous. Turn down the brightness on the "flyback" Get the Tempest manual and find out how to put it in test mode and get the display set up properly.
