My latest acquisition and I forgot how much I love this game. It really gets fun starting at the red levels - when the pulsars come out and the timing of everything gets much more critical.

Ha well I have to do a few "continues". ;) I don't know how in the world anybody could get to the green levels (or whatever comes after the red ones)!

I was just getting mine working tonight between watching OSU vs WISC.
Its a really fun game. However, for some reason my Player 1 does not work. Only player 2. I tried trouble shooting it with the wires, but everything seems fine.
Could it be the board??

Do you mean just the little pushbutton to start a 1-player game doesn't work?

I just got mine working again the other day, and I really missed it. I have only tried one of the Red levels once, but it was a lot of fun. If you can get a high enough score on the game, and change one of the dips, you can start at pretty much any level. I reset the High Scores on this board last night, so now I can't play on the advanced levels anymore. The High Score from the previous owner was over 400,000, and that allowed me to start in the red levels. The Bonus was over 400,000. :)

I might change it at some point, but I like how it's set now. If you don't continue right away, you always have to start at 1 of the higher blue levels (the one where you get 54K bonus). That way you kinda have to earn your way up to the higher levels.

But like I said, I might see that I can never get there and set it so I can start at any level, lol.

Yeah, I only left it like that for one day, but it was fun to actually see the levels. And I think it is dependent on the high score. So now, even if I switched the dip back, I wouldn't get to see it again. I have never scored higher than 120k.

I have Gravitar coming over from Klov to Australia, very shortly ,,

Tempest and Black Widow are next on the list ,,

Tell me Tempest is EXCITING and hard ,, that way i will really enjoy adding these 2 Vectors to my games room ..

Thankyou for the post , Paul .

Tempest is EXCITING and hard! To me it scores high in both of those. It's 1 of those that just gets more and more frantic as it goes on.

I remember when I played it as a kid, it just kinda seemed like it was impossible to keep track of everything and you just kinda moved and fired randomly to kill all the stuff. But you get to where you know *exactly* how you're supposed to handle each thing - it just gets really challenging the higher you go. I think it's a rather superbly designed game - especially for eating quarters quickly BITD.

A little video I made showing some basic Tempest playing tips. By the end of the video I was starting to get a bit flustered trying to talk and play at the same time. I was sitting in a chair trying keep my head out of the way of the camera which was on top of a pinball machine behind me.

Shot timing is very important, so I'm one of the people who has always played it 'cross handed', so I can use my right hand to fire.

Wow that's some pretty awesome Tempest there, Paladin! I didn't realize the steady tapping of the fire button could be such a good tactic - especially with the pulsars. Good stuff!

Thanks for the vid. I started firing like that the other day, and it is working pretty well for me. I definitely was still moving around too much though. I also had no idea what to do with the pulsars. Time to go play. :)

I can make it to the red levels now, but I don't last too long there. I am finding that patience is my biggest problem. It takes a lot of discipline to stay where it is relatively safe. I end up moving to go shoot something, then dying quick. I have been starting at the 54k bonus level because the ones before that are just too easy to get through. I made it to the second red level once, and the first one 5 times tonight. Fun stuff. I have scored over 100k before, but it was starting at a higher level and finishing just the one level. Tonight, I have worked up to 95k starting at the 54k level. Thanks again for the video, it has been a fun day trying out the tips.

Yep this video helped me a bunch! Some things that seemed to help me:
* When I'm in that mode of staying in safe place and killing stuff as it approaches, I do the steady tap and also throw in the 1 tap that I would've done just by itself.
* He gets to this in the vid - the flippers flip faster from some segments. Seems to me you want a flipper coming from a longer segment. So depending on which direction it's coming at you from, you might have to move a segment or 2 over to setup the ideal situation - and you might have to see this coming and move a few times in both directions if you have them coming from both directions.
* I still do a quick sweep of "move and fire" between the pulses of the pulsars - if there's something close there to snag.

Yellow levels get really hard. The damn fuseballs are flying around like cabs in NYC.
