Tempest Restoration

Finally warmed up enough here in Idaho to kick the game restorations in to high gear. Tempest got some love this past week and is on it's way back to it's old self. Here is what i was up against:

This is what happens when the game got away from the previous owner as he was lifting it out of a semi-trailer and the game fell backwards. A busted out corner, cracked piece across the back and a separation on the 2 pieces that slide in and contain the light and speaker :

I glued this piece back together but still had a big ugly crack through it so i stripped it down to repair the crack and refinish it :

This is an early artwork game and so the overlay is a little different than most. Sadly, it has a tear in it. I didn't want to replace it with the newer looking repro overlay so i decided to see if i can make it look a little better. :

I clamped a straight edge across and used a razor blade to make a nice clean cut above the damaged part:

peeled away the damaged part:

removed the adhesive with a wire wheel and now I will paint the exposed area black:

After some cutting and sanding :

I put a little bondo on to have a nice level place to glue a patch:

Sanded it down a little and it's ready for the new piece:

Cut the new piece out:

Started to shape it:

Cut away a small part and then shaped it using nothing but a belt sander turned upside down using it like a grinding wheel:

Glued and clamped:

I will finish shaping it using my mini belt sander once the glue is dry.

Stay tuned !

I really try to use bondo as a last resort and as sparingly as I can :

The weapons of mass reconstruction look on as Tempest sits whole again :

The bondo fills the seam nicely:

The outside edge is filled out a little better too:

Stay Tuned...

Re:

Nice! I have one too and it works. I plan on doing a resto on it sometime in the future. Keep up the good work.

Wow, that is the best jacked up particle board corner repair I have ever seen. I usually only have to patch and sand as I've never gotten a corner that bad. Great job!

Looks great! Looks like you also rearranged the arcade again? AD and SD look like they are in different spots.
