This should be pretty simple to answer for anyone who owns a machine..
When you enter a credit for Tempest, does it make a traditional "credit sound"?

I have read in a magazine published back in 1983 (Joystik - September 1983) referring to such sounds in the Tips and Tricks section, but I can see no evidence (using MAME) that the game has or is supposed to play any noise/chime when coins were inserted.

I don't think so. I think you got blinking 1P or 2P lights, and that's it.

That's exactly right. There is no credit sound in Tempest.

I had hought that maybe there was a particular version that might have played something, but a mixture of misinformation and the ole' memory fading can make you question things.

Thanks for the definitive answer. :)

From what I remember, Atari wasn't too big on the coin-up sounds until the System 1 games and that great "gong" noise. At least they eventually got it right.

you do, however, get that cool quarter clunking sound.

...unless the coin box is missing. Then you either get a dull thud, or the sound of your quarter "plinko"ing into the power supply and a *bzzt* when it shorts out!
