What are Tempests going for?
To be quite honest, it's not really what they are going for, but what's been done to them. The boardsets are getting flaky (or always were) The power supplies need rebuilding, the monitors need rebuilding and LV mods done to them, etc. I would pay $800 for a nice bullet-proofed Tempest (like mine is now). I'd pay $300 for a nice looking, complete one in original condition or condition unknown.
If it's working, and 30fathomdave sits on it, you'll get at least $650.
Funny this came up the other day. I have a chance to pick up one for $500. The guy bought it from an arcade 15+ years ago and it's been stored for quite a bit. It's a solid 8 in condition, typical CPO flaking and some slight cab damage at bottom corners, but nothing major. No water damage whatsoever, boards and power brick are clean, plays great. It looked fine but a couple things struck me as odd. Now, I haven't played or seen a Tempest in well over a decade, but the image on the screen looked much smaller than I remember, kind of like it had been shrunk inward on all sides. Also I noticed on the bottom of some of the text that there was a shading effect where the vector lines didn't match up. Like on the bottom of an "E", it would be blue and right below would be another _ that was greenish. Are either of these problems major, or something that can be tweaked with monitor controls?
Sounds like the pots needed some adjustments on the PCB to expand the pic and the convergence was probably off some too. Typical for a vector that's been bumped around over the years.
