Tempest Power-Off/On Help. Damage?

Hmmm. After another workthrough, it seems like all problems have been solved. I had bent a couple of IC pins on the first reseating, so I checked 'em all. It's working, for now.

Thanks guys!

Well... problem not entirely fixed.

Screen looks like it did with the original problem (screen below) and after 5-8 mins or so, the screen is normal.

It is almost as though after warmup and expansion of something, the connection(s) are properly made somewhere. I have wiggled all of the IC's but have yet to do a real close inspection of cold joints over all of the boards. Is this warmup/expansion thing something that others have seen?

Any other thoughts? Should I just get the boards repaired or buy another set?

If you still have a good image at A11/7 and D11/7, then that confines it to the output section... you could replace the socketed TL082s since it's easy to do.

Thanks Douglas. The image is indeed at A11 and D11. Do you have a sourcing recommendation? Ebay?

Also, I see designations after the '82' such as CP and CN. What does that code signify?

I believe the difference in the package it comes in. The cp is dual in line package and the cn is smd package.

Just ordered the replacements. Will try this. If that is not the problem, off to Kevin (Talon2000) it goes.

Dammit- the IC's were apparently not the problem. So off it goes for repair...

OK- new situation (I think). I was playing and all of a sudden, the screen went dark and the start game lighted buttons went out (but the marquee light was still on). I turned off power and then on again. Screen still dark, marquee light on, but a with muffled white noise in the speaker. Shut the game off again for about 10s or so. This time, a grid came up on the screen and none of the playboard buttons did anything for it.

Any ideas? I have not gone inside yet.

Thanks guys!

The sequence over three days went like this...
1. Was playing and all of a sudden, power was lost.
2. Tried to power on and nothing. Tried a second time- nothing.
3. Tried a third time and got a (~2"x2") grid screen and no front panel switches or controllers changed the screen.
4. Powered on and nothing again.
5. Powered on and only single player button light was flashing but was not operational.
6. And now today; it seems to be working, except that all the high scores got erased.

What could have caused this hiccup to occur? Opinions?

Thanks guys!

Thanks LH. I will do that- the game board was gone over by Talon but I'll check the harnesses. Still not sure why that would reset the memory though.

I had a similar problem after moving my machine. Recheck all your socketed chips and the interconnect cable. I doublechecked all of those and got back working 100%. Only difference with mine is sometimes it would just reset in middle of gameplay, sometime turn off. Now it is nice and snug and locked into place so no more movement. Just my experience. Talons work is rock solid. Thanks again Talon
