Tempest monitor displays correctly when frame is sitting 'flat' on the table. When i stand it on end, either on table or inside cabinet, the colors are distorted, looking like it needs to be degaussed. Colors will reset if the unit is simply turned 90 degrees and put back on the table.

Any ideas on how to correct the vertical display?

i chose not to put the machine on its side or top...

Yes, rotating it 90 degrees to the right presents the proper colors.

So, what did I learn by this exercise?

Once the monitor is in the game, turn the machine a quarter or half turn and see if it goes away

You've just been schooled in simple science my friend. The earths polarity just showed you what affects it can have on your monitor. This tends to be more of a problem during the late fall and winter months.

R E A L L Y !?!

I noticed last weekend that one of my other machines (Gyruss) had a similar issue, and thought I was stupidly magnitizing my tubes or some such.

So i should have my machines on some sort of swivel mounting for seasonal repositioning?

Yes, or you could just buy yourself a degauss ring.

A ring would do something the coil on the tube won't?

I can add that to my list for my next Bob Roberts order.

thanks for the info!!

Your monitor may self correct after several on/off power cycles but if it doesn't, a degaussing ring will help it along. I have this same problem all winter long with any machines that the back faces to the west. If i give it a quarter turn, it always goes away.

The monitor in my DK Jr. does this. Right now the colours are messed up, but if I rotate the cabinet 90 degrees from the direction it's usually oriented, it looks perfect. None of my other games do this. I have a degaussing coil on the way; hopefully that solves the problem.

Please let us know if the coil resolves your issue. I may need to purchase one.

luckily, my tempest doesn't do this in its current spot in my arcade. Might be different in a few months.

Great now I have to align my Tempest in accordance with Earth's orbit??? Great, my own personal STONEHENGE..

(does this mean I at least get to bring a hot young virgin in for a sacrifice?)

Most monitors (including the 6100) degauss on a cold power up... some nintendos have a manual deguass, and you have to press and hold the big red button on the monitor frame for a second or two.

Do you mean the cannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnndy-like button?? (Ren and Stimpy reference)

Probably because the sheer volume of arcade cabinet parts buried in your yard, to the west, has altered magnetic declination in and around your graveyard...errrr... home.

Have you noticed an increase in the number of aircraft near your house?

I have several with backs to the west. All are displaying properly (as i type), and i've never had an issue with my Ice Cold Beer positioned that way.

I got my degaussing coil in the mail today and tried it on my DK Jr. monitor. It worked great! I put some pics in my Restoration thread: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showpost.php?p=1425567&postcount=8

I wanted to get the GC Electronics 9317 based on recommendations, but couldn't find any at a reasonable price with shipping to Canada, so I settled for this one instead for $37 shipped and it still worked perfectly: http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200543633567
