Tempest marquee artwork - why the difference?

Richard,

Might it be possible to get the Irish films? It'd be really cool to have the choice!

Thats really a question for Scott, if he has them. or if some drunken irish leprecahn is dancing a jig with a jug on them in some long forgotten abandon warehouse.

I can only guess as to why the repros turned out the way they did.
and using the orginal films is the only way youd get a better version.

Ive got the cp films as well not sure which version/revision
there were many.

The Tempest cab I grabbed out of a warehouse 6 years ago had an Irish marquee originally. It was kinda cool, but not in great shape. I have to admit there's something about it that I kinda like.

Does anyone know who the original artist is?

I was looking at mine and noticed he signed his work on the marquee but can't make out his name.

Can't help on the artist info, but the colors and detail on your print is so much better than the current reproductions.

john, did you by chance get your tempest from a guy in erie that was selling some games? robb (jonsey) picked up a wizard of wor from him and iremember him having an irish tempest.

No, came from Denver - Wiz was selling one instead of moving it. Thanks Wiz, for a great transaction.

Today I received a Tempest marquee overlay from ArcadeOverlays. It is not overly dark and missing detail like the repro in the OP. This is one I'll put onto my cabinet! :004_ssmile:

But, ArcadeOverlays doesn't punch the oblong holes over the speaker grill. I'm not very steady with an exacto knife - does anyone have suggestions on how to create the six holes with the least possibility of messing it up?

So who is selling the overly dark marquees? I was planning on picking up
side art, CPO, and marquee from arcadeshop. Mistake?

I want to know as well because this is where I was going to get some as well.

seller is AS. I buy a lot of good stuff from them, so not trying to set a bad general tone.

As discussed here, their marquee is less than great. I have also had 2 of their Tempest CPOs in the past 2 weeks that the orange/red around the spinner isn't adhearing to the textured vinyl cover - it peels off when i attempt to remove the backing. See http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=159744&highlight=overlay. They sent me a replacement (charged me shipping) and it does the same thing. They have given me a store credit, which is good, but I am still out shipping costs (x2). I've never seen this on any of their other stuff, so it was probably just a bad printing batch - they said they'd discuss with their printer.

Hope this helps,
John

Any experience with their side art? thats the big ticket item I'd want perfect.

Does anyone else have any plans for printing tempest artwork?

Since I now have a Tempest machine, I'd like to locate a really high quality marquee and control panel overlay for it.

What are everyone's suggestions on the current best place to get them? I see them at Arcadeshop.com and Arcadeoverlays.com. Anyone else?

I'll echo John's comments, except I only got 1 Tempest CPO with the orange/red color peeling issue. Mine was peeled away when I got it before I even thought about putting it on the machine; it must have been part of the bad batch and they're still being sold and shipped. In fact, both my CPO and marquee came crumpled and with bends in them due to poor packaging, so I'm atttempting to get that resolved. We'll see...First time I've had to deal with anything like this with AS; usually reliable.

In the meantime, as I mentioned in another post on this thread, I'm looking for a high quality source for Tempest artwork. I will likely try ArcadeOverlays.com since I've heard a couple of good things. You'd think with the popularity of this game, one of the premier artwork folks would have a good market for a well-done Tempest artwork package.

Thanks,
Greg

Just keep in mind that ArcadeOverlays.com is inkjet. He does do a pretty good job. I have purchased a few custom CPO's from him and others have had good luck as well.

Arcadeshop.com is screenprinted like original. I have heard that it isn't quite right, but it may have been matched to a less common revision since Atari loved to change the artwork all the time.

Honestly, your best bet would be to wait and try to persuade Rich (Rikitiki/thisoldgame.com) to run a new screenprinted version of them.

The screen printed Lunar Lander CPOs were way out, even with original films

Hard to imagine how repro is sometimes better than original.
In the case of the LL Cpos it is

Costly exercise is artwork :(
