Just acquired a Tempest Upright- all lights are working and the red LED's on the main and video boards light, but no video or sound.

Can anyone point me in right direction as to what the problem may be? Or know of a repair source in the San Francisco Bay area?

To answer your question, it's kind of hard to tell if it is a board or monitor issue, or maybe even a power supply issue or maybe even a harness issue. It sounds like you tried to starta game but nothing happened ? What are th red player one and player 2 credit lights on the control panel doing ?

First download a manual if you haven't already done so.
Put dip switches 7 off, and 8 on at location N13 this will set the game to free play, and will cause the 1p 2p buttons to blink.

Power up then check your voltages on the main board itself.
Off the top of my head there is +5, +-15V, and 6.8V

There is a toggle switch on the inside of the coin door. Make sure it's in the middle.

Check 1p 2p buttons to see if they are blinking. If they are, try pressing one and see if you can play blind.

If they aren't move the toggle switch to the up position, and see if self test comes up on the screen. You can toggle through the self tests with the slam switch. It's basically a button leaf switch with a heavy round weight, it's on the coin door as well. Left side looking at the back of the door.

See where you get with these ideas.

Ok, I set dip switches 7 & 8 on N13 to free play but no effect on the 1P & 2P buttons- they still remain steady on (no blink) and still no audio or video.
Voltages check out OK on the main board at the test points.
Next, I moved toggle switch behind coin door to the UP position but no change with the 1P & 2P lights (still steady on) and still no audio or video.

the board has some problems. I would remove every socketed chip and re-seat them, just do them one at a time so you dont get confused. Check the legs on them and see if they look black/dirty and clean them if needed. Reconnect edge connectors. That is where i would start and see if it comes up after that.

Most of the time, I find the interconnect cable to be flaky, and the edge connectors as well as the header pins, re-solder the header pins as most likely the old solder has cracked and is creating bad connections.

+1 on the interconnect cable. Everytime my cab has done zanny things, reseating this cable has always worked.

OK- I cleaned and re-seated all socketed chips on main & auxiliary boards. Also resoldered the pins on the edge connectors and confirmed continuity on the interconnect cable- still no audio or video. I did check the voltages at connectors P18 & P20- Terminal 1 of P20 measured -0.17 volts but s/b +5.0 per my schematics. Terminal 14 of P20 measured -0.1v but s/b +10.6v- all other voltages on P20 checked out ok.
Term 15 of P18 measured 0v but s/b +5.0v.
Also, there's a lot of soldered-in chips that have discolored legs. I think I'll try to clean and reflow the solder on those to see if it helps. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

My Tempest had a similar problem and it ended up being "BIG BLUE" on the power brick. Does the spot killer come on located on the monitor defection board? Also is there a little dot in the middle of the screen?
