Hey guys I just bought this Tempest cabaret. Everything works besides for the monitor. All that will pop up is this line on the bottom of the screen. The previous owner said that all it needed was a couple of transistors on the monitor chassis. anyone have any ideas on where i should start to look? I am not very tech savvy so please dumb it down for a rookie..lol

Thank You!!

Start here: http://www.ultrathegame.com/tempest/6100_faq.pdf

There are six bottlecap transistors mounted to the frame of the monitor, and they can be a common cause of failure on these monitors. The basic Bob Roberts 6100 cap kit comes with them (and many other commonly failed parts) for about $15.

Other common failure points are bad solder joints on the Molex headers and broken wires on the harnesses that connect the frame transistors.

You should post a photo or video of your problem, since it sounds a bit different than the typical frame transistor failure mode — usually you will lose the screen in quarters, with lines through the center of the display, rather than at the bottom.

Yes, very possible that your frame transistors are fried. The guide I linked you to has info on replacing them.

Don't run the monitor like that for very long, or you risk burn-in. These monitors are scarce and expensive.

Thank you for the link. I am going through that section of it right now! I only turned it on long enough to take the picture. I will pick up the parts tomorrow and attempt this repair on my own, or with a friend to post video of my misery on youtube if something good happens. Between this and my ICB I have a couple hours of repair work before I can enjoy my machines.

I've got the same issue, but its not the monitor as I tested it on my buddies Star Wars.. Its the pcbs.. I've got (3) sets of pcbs that have varying issues, and one looks just like that. Try adjusting the x or y pot on the large pcb.

Pots are located on the bottom right hand corner. Silver box.

perfect. one of the bluepots in the lower right. what results should I expect to see from this adjustment?

You want to be adjusting the pots marked X SIZE and Y SIZE, and you want to see the X and Y sizes increase. Ideally into a complete game image.

I gave it a shot last night but didn't see any change through the X or Y size adjustment. I will go ahead and pick up the transistors for Radio Shack tonight and give it a go.
