Was wondering what I need to temp run MAME on my G07 to play GORF. I know I'll also have to plop a temp control panel on since the GORF uses an optical joystick (ugh).

I've been through two board sets and need to put Gorf repair on hold.
I have a spare PC, spare parts for a joystick...

I am wondering what I would need to hook up my Electrohome G07 monitor to a VGA video card. I can also purchase a ULTIMARC VGA if needed ( need one anyway for another project ).

Do I need anything else? I also want to avoid using any of the wiring ( don't want to hack the dedicated wiring ).

The Gorf optical flightstick will work with a standard keyboard encoder like an ipac, I've done it. But you will have to be willing to hack the wiring somehow. Look up the pinout, it's out there, 5v will be necessary it get it working properly, again, look up the pinout on byoac.
To get mame to run on your G07 you can use the Arcade VGA or you can go Soft15K made by a guy screen named "sailorsat" over at byoac. It's gets involved since you will need a VGA-CGA breakout cable but you do not have to use Arcade VGA to get 15k resolutions on certain graphics cards, your mileage may vary...greatly, depending upon the learning curve involved.
Good luck!

Can't get there from here. You need to run a version of MAME that forces the video card to spit out CGA resolution (and have a card compatible with it. GroovyMAME is a good one. Then you'll need a video amp board to get TTL level video to the monitor. PC video output is .7vac and you need at least 4vac for the pix to look right on a regular game monitor.

Documentation for GM is basically non existant, but the guy who wrote it hangs out on the BYOAC forums and there's a seperate section for GM. Its a bit fiddly to set up...I had a hard time with it.

But....your joystick may not be compatible with MAME. I forget if the outputs go hi or low on those optical sticks. You'd need to hack the stick and buttons into a USB gamepad or use a J-pac board to get inputs.

IMO, its *way* too much hassle just to play one game. You'd spend more money getting a MAME setup working correctly than you would getting a board repaired.

Get this to convert VGA to CGA:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/VGA-to-CGA-...488?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19d4314e40

-It will work on any video card
-It will output 15K ALL THE TIME to the cga monitor (not so with soft 15K)
-Only requires a 5V hookup
-Oh and it's less than $40

Soft15 is a hassle. It works, but GroovyMAME works better since it retains correct resolution on a per game basis. I had a soft15 setup in my MAME machine and it looked like shit with vertical games due to the incorrect resolutions. GM fixes this.

I'm sure there is work involved with getting it MAME'd, but figured it's worth it if I have most of the parts laying in my basement. I'm good with PC's...impatient with old hardware. I would really like my GORF to work, but I already went over budget. I figure if I spend a bit to get it converted to MAME, if I have a problem...I restart the computer. GORF goes out...I sent in for repairs, buy another board set (150+) or hope to fix the individual parts.

I guess I'm just overwhelmed by the old stuff.

Last auction ended at $172

Crazy thing....look at the picture: It has two rom boards and the main logic board isn't there. I emailed and they said "oh that isn't the picture of the real one were selling...good catch"....
Hope they weren't lying to the poor guy who bought it.

And there is another one going for $225 from one of the known arcade shops (quarter arcade i believe)

I should have bought this for $25ish but it was missing a board and untested...meaning it was probably broken.

I've seen lots of broken and unknown working boards for less...

I paid $150 for my gorf (cabinet and all the innards). $30 for a bob roberts kit to fix the power supply, $50 for a back up switcher power supply, $40 for an extra board set and audio board, $50 for a meter, $15 for misc parts at Radio Shack and probably $20 bucks in gas driving around getting stuff. It still doesn't work and my wife tells me I'm done spending money. :(

I do have a working Galaxian board and one non working galaxian (I think it needs caps...they look blown), two working DK jr. boards and one working Donkey kong board. They have been sitting on the back burner until my wife cools down on the gorf purchase.

...Hence why I thought I would mame it with parts I have. Oh I also have a Ultimarc VGA card but it's AGP....and I only have PCI Express mother boards now. Ughs...

Wonder if I can trade some of the old boards for working GORF stuff or MAME parts?
