Telling the difference between "asking price" and "selling price"...

Seriously, how many people are unable to do this?

"I've seen this listed on eBay for $2,000!" "I've seen people asking for $1,500 for this!"

Did it sell for $2,000? Did they get $1,500 for it?

Should CL listers have to answer a 10-question quiz re: basic economics before being allowed to post?

They just need a simple reality check is all.....

After attending Saturday's SuperAuction near Atlanta, it would appear that the auctioneers need to take the quiz as well.

Example: "Here we have an Elvira Scared Stiff. Folks, these sell for $5,000 ALL DAY LONG ON THE INTERNET!"

You can't hold that against an auctioneer - his job is to make people pay way too much for whatever thing it is that he's selling. If he's got a crowd full of people who know their stuff, it won't work, but if he's got a couple of newbies who don't really have a CLUE what stuff sells for, then he might get more than the seller dreamed!

True, but I still don't see much difference between the auctioneer and John Doe on Craigslist. They're both trying to make maximum profit by spouting unsubstantiated statistics.

yeah. i was at a toy show on sunday picking up a few transformers, and there was a guy with some nice stuff but all very high priced, over $100 per tf. i asked him if those were actual prices or prices for the idiots that don't know what they're worth, and proceeded to advise him that i'd do business with him but at realistic prices, as i can get most of that shit on ebay for way less shipped. ended up getting a couple deals.

I love when people say "well I'm asking $400, but I'll take $100..."

Umm.. DUH???!!!! You just shot your knees out, brother.
