...And I don't mean how you offered a CL seller another $20 so they would sell the game to you and not the originally-intended buyer. LOL!

Seriously, I have been playing the MAME version of this game, I do everything but mow people over during the prequalification, and I still only come in at 4th place for the PP lineup of the first race. For most of that time I'm at the 288 KM/Hr max so, what else am I supposed to do? Get a NOS bottle??!! Help a handi-pole out. :D

My strategy with Pole Position is to replace the edge connectors in the harness, and also add some heavy power leads with 1/4" spade connectors to plug into the test points on the board. This helps you supply enough power to the board without burning the fingers off the edge.

Oh, wait, you're looking for strategy in actually *playing* the game? No, no ideas there. I suck at Pole Position.

LOL yes I'm talking about *playing* the game, and sadly, how to improve my skills while playing the *MAME* version! (I'm sure to get a pie in the face just for mentioning MAME alone)

Drive really fast and don't hit the other cars on the track. Also, use the shoulder when you need to and don't touch the brake. You wanna slow down? Let off the gas or downshift. Keep your eye 'ahead' of your car so you know what lane you need to be in as you come out of a curve. I am usually a 56-61,000 point Pole Position driver, and if I don't get "Pole Position" on the qualifying lap, I usually attempt suicide.

Keep the pedal on the floor. On turn 3, spin the wheel as hard as you can.

Hilarious. Simply hilarious. Somehow I don't think my PS/2 mouse hack is going to enjoy that little trick much, but we must do whatever is necessary to make ye olde Pole Position, correct?

Yeah, I've been trying to avoid the brake. Also, when coming up on the standing water in the road, should you just drive through it rather than dodge it? When you go thru, it doesn't affect control of the car any (at least none that I've seen), and I really don't think it slows you down any either.

Yeah, I don't think you're going to have all that much luck getting through Pole Position on MAME with a mouse. Part of the game requires very hard sudden movements of the wheel. Also, remember, the uprights did not have a brake pedal - only the cockpit version. Just another reminder that you really don't need the brake.

I am working on it. :)

I don't think PP works correctly in Wolfmame .106. I know I had the same problame as you when using this version of MAME so I gave up. I'm not sure if this issue is fixed with the newest versions but if you look at MARP, almost all of the scores are from older versions of MAME and none of them use .106.

Pole Position won't work correctly in any version of MAME.

The carry over of games with analog controls is faulty.

IMO, you first need to learn the track like the back of your hand - not so tough for PP, more of a challenge for PPII.
Then, while keeping the pedal planted, be totally looking for upcoming traffic - and avoid it!

Hahaha... my strategy for PP was to remove the machine that's been dead for 3 years from my basement and replace it with something that works.
