Tell me everything you know about GameEx

Its Tom here, author of GameEx. I feel I have to reply to that. Although some of it is correct in terms of just facts and I do take responsibility for it and apologise to you again - its the tone and implying that bothers me a little.

Firstly again I take responsiblity for it as the author of GameEx and l apologise again to you as I did before.

However, I was unaware of the GPL violation until you contacted me personaly and at that stage I took the steps to fix the problem. You only contacted me once and I replied and apologised and said I would fix the issue. You most definitly had no issue with this or at least did not express one to me. In addition the use of your code was in a user contributed plugin and not by me. I was unaware it was GPL'd because the user (I dont even remember who it was) had not followed the GPL license or told anyone it was GPL'd.

When you realised I did not know, from your reply you said it was not a huge deal to you even though I would of course rectify the issue which I did.

I feel I had to chime in here because you make it sound like my intentions are sneaky when they are not however I do take responsibilty and again apologise because that is the right thing to do.

Tom, the forum may of made my tone seem off and towards you, but that wasn't my intention to direct it towards you. Your post above is true, but is only about half the story and here may be the problem with how others view GameEX and how you view GameEX. You definitely view GameEX as your baby and your are in charge. Others see certain members or contributors to GameEX as almost the same level as what you are. Before I talked to you, I informed them. I forget why at the time it may because they were asking me for support or maybe I thought they were a GameEX developer. In any case, it appears they didn't have the courtesy to inform you which is why I later informed you. I have no problems with you as you seem to be a stand up guy, but I do not care for some of your other developers who would rather put your project in jeopardy then inform you of the situation.

I don't recall Gozer specifying if he was directly talking to you, which is why I informed him of my experience with GameEX and its contributors. The sad part of my experience was if anyone from GameEX or contributors had read the license they would see it was lpgl as well and could have been compiled as a dll instead of directly into the application and would of avoided the whole issue.

I don't want to make this a back and forth contest to see who has the biggest internet wang, but if you see another problem with my post PM me and we can discuss and I have no problem with saying I was wrong or changing the tone.

No worries, and thanks for the reply. I guess things just slip through the cracks sometimes. I am sure everyone had good intentions though even if they screwed up. Since being involved in this, Ive rarely come across anyone I didnt like or didnt mean well even though I had the odd initial run in and we dont always agree its almost always been sorted out. Wish I could say that about real life.

PS: Mine is bigger. lol

The honorable 2600 is a valuable member here in the KLOV community, so his concerns and opinions don't go overlooked. However, in this case, my mind was already settled regarding the use of the models. Seems like a good fit for them.

Thanks for coming onto the site Tom and trying to sort out things. I look forward to seeing a preview screenshot or video showing the new models in the program.

Gozer,
I used gameex for a few years. I stopped using it because of a sound issue and no one could seem to fix it. I even paid for gameex because I thought it was that good and tom deserves to be rewarded. After switching out motherboards (to eliminate a possible audio chipset issue) and of course different OS versions (x32 and x64) I gave up. I played with hyperspin and fell in love with it. I won't be a poster child but I will say my mame rig is uber insane with power and has all the bling turned on.

Gameex is easier to setup by far and the ability to download updates is much friendlier as well. I will sadly jump on the band wagon and agree that the front end is too microsoftish and hyperspin is more gamey looking. I have played with both extensively and if you have other questions we can talk on the phone about it.

Thanks for the input Deadly. I'm light years away from even building another MAME cab. Money, time, etc. Down the road though, I'll probably give this one a shot, if at the very least, just to see my little models spinning around in each game's menu. :)

LOL, yeah I was very careful not to get into something I could not get out of with 2600!

Seriously, why not check it out yourself? You only have to email me to get a free license (2600 can have one too if he would like one). Its very much designed to run on normal desktop pc's too and interacts very nicely with all versions of windows. Thats probably why people say it is windowish looking but unlike the other front ends it is not just designed for arcade cabs. It can also be used in a MAME32 ish way but on steriods.

I recently built a Mame cabinet and had intended to use GameEx finding it to be very slick and well set up. However, it is a very PC power hungry frontend. More so than Hyperspin. It also feels kind of slow when loading up games. This could be because it is hiding the nag screens. I ultimately went with MameWah because the PC I was building on could not handle GameEx. It was and AMD 2800. I was really surprised to find Hyperspin completely unusable on this chip. It felt like such a speedy chip when it came out. I'll be revisiting GameEx, Hyperspin and Mamewah when I finally get my own rig up and running.

I think you will find it requires quite a bit less than hyperspin. My cab is running an AMD Sempron with a similar speed and Gameex runs like slik on it. So Im not sure what is going on with that. It does require a minimum of 512MB ram and a 3d capable card but it does not require a lot. My cab is running an AGP ArcadeVGA mark 2 which I think is based on Radeon 9000. It may be we can fix your performance issue if you post at gameex.info. I want GameEx to run on older hardware.

Just wanted to let you know I got round to updating the youtube video on the homepage of gameex.com and it now shows the models a little.

It really only takes a few minutes to setup with MAME if you wanted to have a look for yourself. Its not like the old days of setting up front ends.

Awesome! Thanks for the update sir. I'll cruise over to the site later tonight and check it out. :)
