Considering making an offer on one, supposidely fully working. Never played it. I saw one dead at an auction last week and thought the cabinet was bad ass (though the CP looks like it'd take some getting used to). Game looks OK on YouTube, nothing special, but definitely some stellar sounds.

Anyone own one of these? Value? Do you like the game? Is it a pain as far as upkeep?

I recently bought a mini project. Haven't restored it yet, but it should turn out nice. For a particle board Midway cabinet, mine is in good enough shape. I've yet to power it up, but it isn't supposed to play blind, so it has power issues at the very least.

It appears to have simple gameplay, but I like the reflexes aspect of it, and the fact that the hardware is related to Gorf.

Tell me about Space Zap.

Wish I had bought the prototype that was on ebay years ago.

I remember the seller having a hard time selling it.

It had a color monitor and the cabinet was red.

I love Space Zap, reminds me of Cosmic Ark for the 2600 (at least the part I like). I've seen one Midway cab, but none since then. I remember the first time I saw one, thought it was 3 years older than it actually was based on the sound and gfx. Still, a great game and I would love to add one to the game room. Maybe I'll see what I can trade for this slot car track..

i have one i that i have restored, including the stencilled side art.proper good fun game and yes the reflex aspect is realy part of the whole fun.it just gets harder and more challenging as you go along and the laugh factor increases along the way.

i have the same upright you have pictured in your post and it is actualy made of ply the one i have, side plexis and all with it.

being in the uk the cabs here are very rare, all of them, there is no (what might be called) common,if we have common cabs they are jamma here.

so giving you a price guide would be hard as our prices are very inflated in comparrison to usa.mine has cost me £600-£700 to restore so far, just got 1 leg leveller to fit as i had trouble with the t nut it screws into and it twisted off the bottom of the cab,it was rusted up.

my cab would be worth £1000 in the restored state its in.

for you i know someone bought one for $100 cabnadian on another forum.
:)

I've had one for a few years now, and honestly its sort of been ignored since the previous owner completely dissassembled it, lost some parts, had some issues with it, etc. Since then I had it working at one point (repaired a broken wire) but I think it developed another broken wire or something again. Anyhow in that short time I had it fully working I played the hell out of it..couldn't believe how nuts it got!

Once my garage is clean again I plan to finish restoring it, which is basically more or less repainting or powder coating all the metal pieces and re-assembling from pieces. I also found a bezel for it which I couldn't find for ever.

If youre asking if it is fun, then yes it is. It is just pretty basic with not much variety as you might imagine. I owned a cocktail version which was neat but before my time so I ended up selling it.

I can tell you I have wanted one since foolishly passing on this one at the auction:

Deja vu, I'm betting thats the same exact one sitting next to the same exact blue print I saw at the last auction here.

Whats a fair price to pay? I can get this or a non-working but complete Gorf for around the same price.

Phet, I talk to the auctioneer guy and he said a bunch of that stuff was hauled from the Minnesota auction. Did no one bid on the Space Zap in Minnesota?

Get them both and ask for a discount of course. They use the same Midway card rack systems, sound card, power supply, rgb board so it should be easy to find the problem with the Gorf and get them both running in no time.

I wouldn't pay over $200 for a very nice condition Space Zap.

Weighing in on gameplay. I would have to say this is surprisingly addictive.

Most iPad games nowadays are like Space Zap. Over simplistic and maddeningly addictive and you feel guilty for liking it.

If I had a chance I'd pick one up. It's like dance dance revolution for your hands.

space zap dosnt use an rgb board, you can add one as the game does actualy output in colour but,it uses a b/w monitor.to get a colour monitor to work you need the rgb board fitting.

also the power and the actual racks boards could be different, you would have to check up,i think the ram boards are the same the game/cpu boards might be different, same gos for the power supplies on different games which use similar system but,its actualy different in some places.
:)

Bought it for $125, working all the way and looking good :D

Heres what it looks like after a quick cleanup. CP needs some touchup work, but functions. Marquee is flaking a little near the Midway logo, and all the bulbs are blown (of course). Otherwise its in very nice shape. Have no idea what its worth but I think I did well on it. Heres the first batch of photos... batch 2 coming right up...

Pic 6 - Yep, its a Space Zap alright :D

Pic 9 - Found all the original paperwork & schematics inside, nice. Also a set of leg levelers in a cloth bag, never used. What you dont see in the photo is the page from a "ahem" rated X mag, along with a sheet of notebook paper with some website URL's written down (I'm guessing also rated X). Needless to say I scrubbed my hands and arms real good after pulling that from the cab.

Pic 10 - I usually dont care much about serial tags, but mines #210. Anyone know how many of these were made?

Only other queries I can think of now is... Is there a HSS kit, Should I use LED's for the marquee, and anyone know where I can find a replacement fire button for a cheap price?

i got one that is near the end of the restore.

you find (well it was in the case of mine) the paint work/art flakes off,you might find loads of vertical splitting of the top ply.buttons are pretty hard to find, you are in usa,me in uk so you will fair better than me,seeing as these are rare here.i only ever found 1 person who said they had buttons, prob was they was on a populated cp so they didnt want to part it,same seller who had a monitor bezel on ebay.com.needless to say i passed as it would have cost a foprtune to import and my buttons are not that bad.

mine is in the low 1000 0dd.

as far as i know there is no hss kit for this game

also i see you got bad screen burn, mine has also but,it has a tube out of another b/w game, looks like my tube was originaly on a baseball game.

and i just used standard 9v lights in mine, the orange glow sort, does the job.

they are very nice cabs to look at.
:)

Space Zap was one of my favorites BITD. I used to drop quite a few quarters into a Space Zap mini that was at my local arcade. Steve23 had a Game-A-Tron version that he posted pictures of. Would not mind having one of these or the Midway version.

I picked up a board cage and a full set of boards a while back. Still have not found a machine though.

Edit: Of course it is not supposed to have a joystick. ;)

That looks like a converted Space Invaders
