Tell me about House of the Dead

I have the one that's about the size of a sit-down driver... I'm not sure which one is more desireable by the masses, but I like the cabinet design of this one better if you have the room for it. The CRT is exposed and not behind a sheet of glass or plexi, so it's easy to clean w/o having to dig into the cab. In other words, you're shooting at the CRT itself, and not at a mirror like w/ the other design (which provides the illusion of depth). The other cab (that's shaped more like a refrigerator) appears to have the same design as the early Virtua Cop games, which is obviously less deep, but I believe it is wider.

I'm afraid I wouldn't know which is the heavier of the 2...

HOD and HOD II still go for good money because they still make money on location.

If you really want a HOD II and can't afford the real thing, you can buy a dreamcast and if you look hard enough there was an adapter made for the dreamcast that allows you to coin up and play the game in a standard JAMMA cabinet. That way you can also avoid all the pitfalls of the guns and monitor sensors for the original game. I believe the Dreamcast also can switch to VGA output so you can play it in higher resolution like the arcade game.

A few months ago I came across a HOD multigame - the guy had a bootleg HOD board in it and the Dreamcast with HOD II in it. There was a switcher that switched between these games. I should have bought it but dragged my feet. It was weather damaged but semi-working. He wanted $125 for it. Yeah I should have bought it when I had the chance...

It's also possible to get rid of the gun system in the HOD II and Jurassic Park -the system for Virtua Cop II can be used in HOD II and JP with a little work. Ken Westerfield knows how to do it. A lot of times you come across these games with the shooting system being dead and this is a cheap alternative to buying the expensive replacement guns, boards and sensors.

I have my MAME cabinet setup to play all 3 PC versions of HOTD.
Virtua Cop 1 & 2
almost every American Laser games shooter as well.

To be honest - man do these shooters get old as hell. I would personally never invest on a shooter. The replay value is quite honestly zero. Now throw in some other shooters in MAME such as Point Blank and Golgo - those are fun as hell.

Here is what you need to do: Get a wii, purchase House of the Dead 2 and 3, which is currently on sale at all Gamestop locations for $15. Buy the $15 "quickshot" (I believe that is the name) gun shaped controller that holes the wii remote. The games have a calibration feature that works very well. You can either run it off a projection or plasma or standard TV setup. If you use the projection setup, mount a wireless sensor bar either just above or below the screen and configure it properly in the wii settings menu. It works GREAT, and will cost you less money. I have a DLP projector with about a 70" screen and pump the sounds through stereo speakers with a subwoofer in my gameroom. Everybody LOVES it. HOTD: Overkill is also on sale for the same price. It is REALLY cool, but has lots of mature dialogue for adults only...

Overkill is a lot of fun, but bears repeating, it is not even remotely work/kid/whatever safe. There's more f-bombs in the first 20 minutes than there are bullets in your average Irem shooter.

I have Jurassic Park Lost World upright. People love that game and it's always one of the most played games at my events. It's probably one of the last games I will get rid of when the time comes to get out of his hobby.
