I posted this as a response to tekkev's topic, though at over 100 messages in size it is clear that some people didn't see my response. I'm seeing posts in other threads and just got a 'what happened' email. So I'm posting it here. It's repetitive for some of you.
---

A message was posted yesterday afternoon entitled 'Where is Spaeth?' A few legit responses followed, including a mention that he was seen online elsewhere.

Post #6 someone commented in response "...I don't care too much about the political views or day-to-day ramblings, but I appreciate the technical discussion Mark puts out."

Post #7 teckkev responds with "???? Technical ????" [Which could be seen as a personal attack, though I said nothing about it.]

Post #9 someone posts "i emailed him a few days ago. he replied that due to the stuff that'd happened, he's all done with klov and will be moving on."

* Post #11 - teckkev responds with "I guess he ran with everyones pcb's too, lol"

* Post #12 - arcrevival responds with "Ya, because not posting here anymore automatically means he just bailed with everyones stuff... Pretty d!ck comment to make. "

* Post #13 - teckkev responds with "Not going to start.. just clicking the report button." [and he did report Post #12]

Other people critique or jab at post #13

The thread continues and moves on...

Meanwhile, back to yesterday, teckkev and I exchange email and pm about moderation and the forums in general in what I would call a mutually respectful and constructive manner.

I woke up today with a screen and a half full of 'post reports' from nearly two dozen people. 10% were about old threads. 90% were about Posts #11 and #12 above.

I read teckkev's last email to me (from last night), and read the posts, and sent him a message which basically continued the previous discussion (about guidelines in general), and then called him on his Post #11 above.

I wrote about the Post #11 above: "When someone asks 'where is mspaeth', and you simply write 'I guess he ran with everyones pcb's too, lol'. It was a 'pretty dick comment to make' [a reference to Post #12], and added no value. We already have plenty of messages about mspaeth and the boards already." [my statement to him was private until he started this thread]

I then explained that I thought it was a personal attack, that numerous other people responded to those posts, and that I was thinking of banning him for the day. I added " Don't take it personally as a big deal."

I finished with "If we don't try to keep some consistency the attacks will just keep creeping back and getting worse again. The boiling effect. If I'm not a hard-ass about the personal insults the forums will just drown in the cesspool they have become." [EOM]

As far as the threads mentioned, one of the moderators moved the whole thread offline.

Since teckkev hadn't actually been banned he had no problem logging on and creating this thread. He also sent me a measurably longer email that was simply a 'richer' version of his post that started this thread.

After posting this thread, I put a one day ban on his account. A new user would have got a permanent ban thread, and this thread would have been deleted. Since he isn't a new user, he is getting a little more latitude*. [*=kids, don't try this at home. Posting McLemore FUCK OFF! threads is inherently dangerous, and may result in personal account injury or account death].

So, in short, I wrote him a msg saying I thought his post wasn't helping and you have seen the public side of his response.

I have a thick skin and I'm happy to move on. It's up to him though whether he wants to come back and be a productive member of the forums.

I have some other thoughts about moderation in general, warnings, guidelines, and bans (temporary and permanent), but I'm heading into a meeting now so it and I should probably post a new thread anyway (I'm still going to move this thread offline).

(copied from the other thread)

re: the comment. Plenty of people took it as serious. Also, if it was meant as sarcastic the timing wasn't ideal... and was following a topic (the circuit boards) that had already been beaten dead.

Personally I thought the MSpaeth comment was meant to be a funny sarcastic reference to the thread that started all this insanity.

But Archrevival responding with profanity is what made everyone else think teckkev was serious.

.

This thread is meant to be of pretty focused topic and may itself by 'closed' soon.

Mac at this point it seems like you are piling on. Just let it go. If Tek or Mark want to come back then they will. We all need to drop the seriousness and get back to talking about games and each others shortcomings (in a nice way that isn't degrading).

Yeah...you should perhaps post the OP only then close the thread so a bunch of ya-hoo's like me don't come in and screw it all up.

I've gotten tons of emails (and seen tons of posts), saying 'so and so deserved that, why didn't you take more action', or 'you took to much action', or 'what about so-and-so', etc.

Obviously perspectives can differ. Additionally, when enough people art part of the problem than the whole situation gets a little challenging.

One thing of importance...

In addition to my self and the regular moderators there are other admins that are not necessarily familiar with individual personalities on the board. Something said in jest may not be seen as such by someone not familiar with the people, which is ok with me, as new users would have the same response...

Same with comments in general. There have been a number of comments made where twenty people interpret it as an insult and another twenty do not. Please keep in mind how other people might construe something...

I'd like to see a lighter side too and for all of these abuse topics to become old news.

I dont see what all the fuzz is about as "I guess he ran with everyones pcb's too, lol" is humor to me, even I know that someone that isn't on KLOV anymore just doesn't completely vanish like a ghost.

Well:

Someone not posting on the forums for 2 days doesn't mean they are not on here anymore.

Again, many people didn't take it as humor, especially because of the long threads about mspaeth and the boards earlier in the week.

The fact that admins now passing judgement are missing most of the big picture is part of the problem. You can't effectively moderate a forum unless regularly involved in it. The problems currently overwhelming this site have been brewing for a LOOOOOONNNNNNGGGG time. There have been countless threads on here that should have never reached the lengths they did.
In most cases, the only thing necesary mod wise would have been to close the thread and add a simple closing "Shut the eff up everyone not directly involved - involved parties take it to PM" line. Noone needs to be banned or anything. Now if someone opens a new thread to continue a mod closed thread, then you deal with said person with a warning, and maybe action.

I've said it over and over, byoac is a great model for moderation. I haven't even seen a Post hell or locked thread in a while over there.

Personally, I am quite happy to see you taking a hands on approach lately. It will all work out and calm down eventually. Just remember, a simple thread lock and "Shut the eff up on this subject" goes a long way in establishing control.

I've not followed this entire thread and really don't care to at this point..but unless someone is gone for a longgggggggggg time from these boards who has time to know how long its been since someone else posted..for that matter..who cares...I wish I had as much time as some others apparently do to follow others posting patterns......:D

FYI..this post is not meant to offend anyone..I'm speaking generally..

Well that's another way to look at it.
I seen the threads and things and thought it was time for some humor and found Kevins post to be funny.

why are people so serious or emo about some stuff on a Arcade forum, there are worse things you can encounter in live you know, a lot worse then what was going on in the mspeath topic.

Oh and I forgot to say, what i've said before: keep in mind that many people that were hanging around in the arcades were "damaged goods" I for sure am, and those who still love the machines today....need I say more?

So you can't expect this forum to be all "normal"all of a sudden.

Can I ask you a question mclemore?

Are you looking for some sort of bland, ho-hum, low traffic, congenial forum here?

If so, you might as well choke us all out right now.

Now you didn't tell him that his post #11 was "a pretty dick comment " did you ? Agreeing with post #12 ? Cause if you did............
