Aloha All,

I've had a Tekken Tag Tournament for about a year. It has only seen light use, but worked well, after replacing the dead screen.

I put it out on location last week and came back this week for some other maintenance and now it is dead. All I see on the screen is a solid color background, typically green, but no game, sound or anything.

All of the rest of the cabinet is powering up fine, and the connections inside look OK so I am guessing that the game board died.

Any ideas on how I can troubleshoot and/or fix?

Also, does anyone know if I can use a later Tekken board set in this cabinet?

Thanks - Brian

The SMD RAM and CPUs on Namco System 12/11 boards are notorius for losing connection. I have a couple of non working Tekken Tag boards myself that refuse to boot most of the time.

The CPU board (the large square one on top) is interchangeable with other System 12 boards, though. If you have a working Tekken 3 or Soul Calibur you could verify wether or not the problem is on that board.

If it isn't, like my two, good luck. I've reflowed the solder on the SMD chips on mine without success.

Brian.

Aloha Brian,

Thanks for the advice. I will attempt to reseat that board next time I'm out there. That actually makes some sense. It is quite a drive out to the west side and there's a good chance that things could have shaken loose.

If that doesn't fix it, do you know if there are games that I can swap in? I know its Jamma + a kick board. Does any of the later Tekken boards fit in this cabinet without much alterations?

All the Tekken series boards use the same kick harness minus the extra 5th button like tag has. Soul calibur has the same pinout along with soul edge and Egheriz which are all Namco fighters just plug n play easy swap.

Reseating the board could help, but what I was referring to was reflowing the solder on the SMD (Surface Mount Device) CPUs and RAM. Those are the 1 1/2" square chips with about 120 pins coming off them and the bank of 8 or 10 little chips that all look the same.

While it is true that Soul Calibur/Soul Edge uses the same number of buttons and connections as Tekken/2/3/Tag, I would hate to play it with a square shaped button layout.

Make sure you check the power with a meter before you do any of that, though, it could be something as simple as your power supply is only putting out 4 volts or something.
