I have a Tekken 5 machine that I'm repairing for a customer that has been having an intermittent problem (well until now) now it appears to be a permanent problem. I just get what looks like scrambled text at the very top of the screen. The program will not boot any further. I've been able to get the game running several times by rebooting in the past. I cleaned all of the dust etc out of the bottom of the cabinet. Ensured all the fans are working properly. I even disassembled the CPU and dvd unit and cleaned them all out as well. I tried also installing a new power supply but the behavior is the same. I've tested the voltage of the current PS and all tests ok. The DVD appears to be pretty scratched so I'm inclined to think its having difficulties reading the DVD.

Does anybody else have expirence with this issue that could save me some trial and error? Does anyone offer new copies of the DVD for the version above?

Thank you,

Don't quote on me, but I seem to remember that you can run a dvd-r copy of the game as long as you have the legit security chip. Try to make a dvd image of it, and reburn it. I would give it a try!

Hmm... PS2-based hardware. If they included the standard PS2 security, that's not gonna fly. Worth a shot though, assuming he can find a drive that will read the disc in its current condition... that might be a bit of a stretch.

You could always find someone that has a working disc and try it in your machine. If it works, try a copy of it. Worst case, if I'm really having problems with a game boardset, on occasion I'll buy a second boardset from eBay and flip it once I have my original working. You usually make everything but shipping back.

Thanks again. You know I re-read my post and I left out a major detail! Very sorry. For some reason I assumed you all could read my mind and knew I was working on an upright arcade (coin-op) tekken. I'm not sure this changes any of the suggestions but very sorry for not noticing my oversight sooner. Has anyone been able to make a fresh copy of namco's original Tekken 5 DVD? I obviously have the correct dongle if I can get a dvd in good repair.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

update

Just an update on my Tekken saga. I was able to make a copy of the original DVD. I pulled the DVD player out of an e-machine tower computer and installed it with the fresh copy of the DVD. The game will now boot every time! Bad news is it only boots with graphics about 1 in 7 re-boots. Most of the time it will boot to a black screen. Coin up and other sounds will work so the logic seems to be working. When it does boot up with graphics you can play for 2 to 5 min before all the graphics freeze, however I continue to have sound. It really appears the graphics card may be bad but I wouldn't know were to get a replacement as it appears to be specific to namco.

as the unit is basically a PS2 I believe, had a couple of these that had gfx issues, probably down to the main board and GFX chip getting hot due to lack of cooling, dust maybe? similar to the dreaded RRoD I dont know, not sure what they used from the PS2 and what was added, have to rip one apart and see if you can fix with an old PS2?

again Im not that techy, just an observation from the few I had, and went down the same path as you with freezing etc

Hmm interesting thought. Yeah the first thing I did was pull the CPU and clean everything and check all the fans. I wish I had another graphics card to try, it seems like it would either be a faulty graphics card or processor at this point. I never thought of seeing what from a PS 2 I could use for parts. If I get ahold of an old one maybe I'll tear into it. Thanks.

Stealing pieces from a PS2 would involve SMT desoldering, possibly BGA desoldering, the latter of which I'm not sure has actually been successfully done without killing the chip. The 256 uses many of the same ICs as the PS2 but the PCB itself is completely different, so you'd have to desolder the target components from the PS2 mobo and resolder them to your 256 PCB. (Keep in mind we're talking 99.9% SMT components with numerous BGA ICs.)

So you're getting missing graphics, but not artifacting? It almost sounds like it's rejecting your replacement DVD-ROM drive. Typically arcade boards are very picky about the DVD drive attached and you'll get weird issues if you don't use a compatible drive, which could be a specific model, or a certain family, or any drive based on a certain design, or other oddball requirements... It's a clusterfuck, to be sure. Try the original drive with your new DVD.

You know...thats why we all post, somtimes we miss the easy stuff. Thats a fantasic Idea. I'll put the orig DVD drive in with the new DVD...thanks so much. I'll post the results.

I have 2 system 246 systems which are a little older but stiil resemble a ps2. One is running soul caliber 2 and the other is running Tekken 4. The Tekken is very pickey to which dvd drive its running in.Where Soul Caliber is not. So if it does not work with the original dvd player i would try and find another replacement dvd maybe from another old computer. If you google it theres a list online of compatible dvd players, Luis
