Hey Gang....

So today I powered on my Namco Tekken 5 arcade machine and got nothing. I can hear the fan running, and I briefly got a blue screen and then a black screen and nothing else. I haven't powered it on in 2 weeks, mind you I haven't had any issues with this particular machine since I purchased it a few years back.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Scott

First things to check, connections, power supply, and fuses.

Okay, went over all the connections. Only found one fuse at the back of the machine, was good. As for the power supply, not really sure how to test this... the fan was running in the power supply and the fan also running where the dvd drive is.

Tried to hook a vga monitor I have up to it, no picture though. VGA monitor I have runs off a pandora box I have... so I know that monitor works.

Ideas?

Took the back off the machine, check all connections. Turned on the machine, and noticed no glow in the flyback.... pressed the Degausser and headr the normal noise... still no pic... got a 4 second weird blue screen and then black again. If no glow in the fly back,

SANWA Electronics

Model #29PF31

I'm thinking the monitor is pooched now? Cap kit?

A couple months back, the pic would come up as a third of the screen and after 15 minutes would go to full screen.

hook up the system 256 to an LCD and see if you get a picture (or is it playing blind, etc).

The DVD drives in those things ~literally are terrible~ so its important to see if its sitting there trying to load a disc that won't ever load

I tried hooking up a lcd, however got the message Not Supported.

Also tried hooking up a old crt computer monitor, got a message Not in Sync, check settings

DIP switches
1 off=Game mode, on=test mode
2 off=3v video output, on=0.7v video output
3 off=15khz video, on=31khz video
4 off=composite sync, on=h/v sync

make sure you've got it set right

I have the same machine and had the same symptoms. Likely your DVD drive took a dive on you and needs replacement. If so, simple cheap fix. Take it out of your 256 and if you have a desktop PC with ATAPI, see if it still works.

Current DIP settings

1 OFF
2 OFF
3 ON
4 OFF

I'm thinking the new setting for the LCD would be

1 OFF
2 ON
3 ON
4 OFF

??? - this is the first time I doing this

Just a note of caution, not all DVD drives will work as drop in replacements. Here is a list here of ones known to work. However, if you have access to some old PC's to salvage parts from, it is worth taking a stab in the dark with them.

The current DVD drive in the machine is ASUS E616A3, manufactured March 2007.

Checked the DVD... seems to be spinning... Wouldn't work on my PC

I had a few of these systems about a year ago, they all had drive issues. I tried several random dvd drives, even a few dvd-rw's and they all worked. The only one I couldn't get to work was a Sony brand dvd drive which is kind of odd because I believe that hardware is actually made by Sony. The drive you have that won't read most likely has a bad laser.

Tried the DVD drive from my 1999 Dell pc. I can hear the drive working, again no picture and no sound. That DVD rom drive was a NEC

This doesn't sound like a bad drive. Last one I had with a bad drive would still display on the screen something to the effect of "program loading" and just hang there. Sounds like you're not getting any display at all. But its been a few years since I last had one.

I believe you can adjust the dip switches to support an LCD monitor. Those system 256s are essentially a PS2

Thanks, I tried hooking up an old crt/vga... but couldn't get a picture on it.

I played around with the DIP switches... couldn't get anything. Mind you, it restarted the machine a couple of times. So I know it's working somewhat. When the machine turns on, I get the static sound from the monitor. Monitor stays BLACK for about 5 minutes... then turns dark blue... for 10 seconds, then BLACK again. Don't know if the climate was a bit too cold, as I keep the arcade room a bit colder. My other machines work fine though.

Gotta borrow a friends LCD to hook up as suggested... try that tomorrow.

Another question I have is... the USB port on the 256... will it support an external dvd drive with USB? Just figured I'd ask.

I got that error too. Sometimes it would show a waiting screen. Sometimes I would get a good morning sound then go no further. Sometimes I would get a blue screen followed by a black screen. Found a known good drive on eBay and it came back to life instantly.

Okay, hooked up an LCD monitor.

Played around with the dip switches, got Start Program on the monitor!

Nothing more.
