I've got my shopping list together to upgrade the speakers in my STTNG. Has anyone else done this that can talk about any gotchas or other products or options I should consider?

Instead of upgrading the subwoofer in the cabinet, is it worth it to consider just wiring up a connector for an external, enclosed subwoofer ala Ed Cheung's Space Shuttle?

I followed the guide at http://www.dziedzic.us/wpc_speaker_replacement.html for the various molex connectors and various posts around the interwebs for specific speaker suggestions. These are what I have in my cart at parts-express:

I put together a "speaker upgrade kit" for my Dirty Harry, which is also a DCS. What you have there should sound great. I used some $30 Sony speakers for the backbox and an unknown brand 8" woofer that I had taken out of a car base tube. Then I bought a l-pad from partsexpress. Sounds awsome, way better than pre-DCS pins with upgraded speakers.

Don't you need an amp too?

When I did my WPC DCS machine, I used an amp behind the new woofer and the extra 12v pin from the coin door board to power it.

The sound board amp output would not drive the woofer alone.

The guide did not talk about needing an amp, unless I completely missed it. Isn't the sound board amp driving the woofer that's in there now?

You don't need an AMP when using the supplied connections from the board . If you bought the wrong Ohm rating speakers then your system didn't have enough power to drive them and of course will sound terrible at the same time.

In this scenario - WCS systems supply 8 ohm for the front speakers which wiring in two 4 ohm speakers in parallel will equate to 8 ohm and they should sound great!

No, wiring those 4-ohm speakers in series would be close to an 8-ohm load.

Wiring diagram from the website shows WPC DCS backbox speakers to be hooked up in parallel (I think):

It says "This configuration presents an effective impedance of around 4 ohms." Which is confusing, because if you're hooking up two 4 ohm speakers in parallel, it should equal 2 ohms, shouldn't it?

Ok, so since that DVC sub has two 8 ohm coils, if I hook them up in parallel, I should get 4 ohms?

It's quite a bit less watts than the 205, but then again, I should only need 25 watts anyway. It's also about 20 bucks less.

For top speakers, yes in parallel it would be 2 ohms. In series it would be 8 ohms. In parallel your sound is better but the down fall is you are driving the amplifier harder - which presents more heat. People will argue that the sound quality actually differs. :)
