culprit-
ofrroad thunder with neotec 2701 monitor

problem- after game is on for a few minutes, monitor gets very bright with retrace lines and the picture is unseen because its full bright..

what i did: recapped monitor and reflowed pins.

NOW- monitor still does the same thing with brightness.

*note: if i tap cabinet top a few times, monitor will go back to normal and brightness problem goes away. but, 5 minutes later, its all bright with retrace lines again.

i swapped remotes from another working neotec and it still does the same thing.

cabinet connections (AC and color signals) to monitor are fine.

After a full cap kit, reflowing the joints and a good remote board, I would be very suspect of the screen pot in the flyback. Neotec's are known to have flyback issues, and although it's usually the focus circuit, the screen circuit has equal opportunity to go bad.

Try a flyback in it, if you still have problems there may be a solder joint issue still or a hairline crack in a trace going open (that could be a tough one to track down).

Brightness/screen and/or focus problems on Neotec monitors are mainly caused by bad flybacks. They drift internally and can be tempermental. The replacement flybacks are made by a different supplier and of much better quality.

Can the flyback also cause a dark image with the Neotec chassis? Color is fine just brightness is way low.

Thanks for the reply.

I have done most of the caps... Still more to do.

I do not have a CR71 socket for my Super Mack to rejuv.

If I even up the screen control on the flyback a tiny bit, it washes out with the scan lines visible.

Could be a tube, but Neotec usually used RCA tubes that generally have held up pretty good, compared to the Zenith junk Wells uses/used. I'm just not seeing the tube problems on the Neotec's like I do with Wells. Perhaps as they age it will be more common.

If you have not done the power supply output caps, do those first. Low heater voltage due to a failed SMPS output cap is the single most common cause of dim pictures on the 270x series. These are the caps all grouped together on the corner of the board by the power supply section.

Thanks for all the help you guys give. It is so valuable to be able to ask questions to knowledgable people.

My tube is an RCA. I am going to replace the FBT and the caps you suggest.
