TECH: Missile Command cocktail trackball replacement.

I have a Missile Command cocktail that I recently picked up that has two flaky trackballs. Rather than rebuilding the originals, I've been considering replacing them. I was wondering if anyone knows if the Happ 2.5" trackballs physically fit into an MC cocktail and (if so) whether any wiring modifications are necessary in order to install them.

Thanks!

Do the encoders still work? Are the casings of the tbs broken in any way? Because if they still basically function, then it's probably a lot cheaper to rebuild than buy new. Arcade shop has roller/bearing kits for $20 and balls for $8. I don't know what new tbs go for other places, but Suzo-Happ lists them at over $100 each.

If you do replace, let me know, I might buy the old ones off of you.

@mhkohne: The problem is the encoders--they're definitely on the fritz in the player 2 TB and intermittent on player 1. I can get Happ TBs for $45/each, so if they'll work I think I'm just going the replacement route. I'll let you know when I do it.

@tron guy: Yeah...I lost my password long ago and kept meaning to change it so I could log back in. Just now got around to it. :)

OK, well, then yea, @$45/ea, that makes sense. I wasn't sure what the Happ TBs really went for because I haven't looked around. Thanks!

Missile Command cocktail trackballs are unique to that game. They have 3 mounting holes, not 4 (because of the tight fit). I've never seen anything like them on other games. So, no, the Happ 2.5" won't work as a direct replacement.

I think you'd be better off just looking for original parts instead of trying/making something new.

I have a pair of MC cocktail control panels. Are you looking for whole assembly or just the encoder boards?

Well, since the Happ ball won't work as a direct replacement, I guess I'm looking for complete assemblies (since I'd have to rebuild them anyway--they're pretty worn out). Drop me an e-mail at [email protected] and let me know what you want for them.
