Hey guys,

tryin to fix a bud tapper. Plays great, just no sound. I understand there may be a few separate boards in there...I guess one dedicated for just the sound? What advice can you send this way? Anything to look for off the bat? Easy fix?

Thanks as always,

Joe

The top board where most of the connectors plug into is the sound board. Try replacing the cables if they are original. Also reflow solder on the header pins that the cables plug into.

Error message

Opened the back door to have a look. It's filthy in there...looks to be all original. pushed the test switch to see what would happen and I got a message saying "error sound board a10". You can hear "air" coming out of both speakers, but no effects.

The game is also acting a bit funny. The bartender randomly teleport to the other side of the screen and off into another object. Not sure if the boards are just dirty or if I need to replace something.

Monitor needs to be capped, need to freshen up the cupholders and footrest, need new cpo, and need replacement bud tap decals. Anywhere know where to get these?

I know little to nothing about pcb's, especially mcr games. Pics and any info would help greatly. Dummys guide to tapper repair would be awesome...who's gonna publish that!

Thanks,

Joe

I'm currently restoring a Tapper, so I'll be reading all your threads. :D

I just fixed a similar problem on my Journey (same boards) and it was the 93422 Ram on the video generator board. First replace the cables between the boards and then clean those chips. If still screwed up, swaps the chips as there are 4 or replace.

Ok, can you tell me which cables should be replaced along with the chips? What do they look like? where to get them (bob Roberts)? How do you replace chips? If it's just like doing a cap kit, it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

As for the restoration, I plan on filling in the holes in the cpo with wood filler and buying the new overlay from arcadeshop...saw their stuff online last night. Then I'm going to prob take off the cupholders and footrest and buff them. Being that the paint on mine is a bit worn off I will most likely spray paint them brass and reinstall.

Bob Roberts sells the cables. Be sure to read his doc and not install them wrong. If your boards are in the metal case, the cables won't fit and you'll need to grind down the edges.

For now you can try reseating all the chips to clean them. Reseat one chip at a time. Use a small flat head screwdriver and gently pry each corner of the chip a little at a time. Don't scratch the board underneath the chip as you pry it out. Try not to bend any pins and gently straighten them out if you do. Install the chips back with the notch on the end facing the same direction as before and most likely the same direction as the other chips. Make sure no pins are bent after it's back in the socket. You can also just lift up each end a bit one at a time without taking it out. This sometimes will clean it enough to work. If the legs are really dirty, clean them with a pink eraser.

You'll see the 93422's labeled on the video generator board. There's 4 in a row. I'm not sure if those are bad on your board, so try cleaning all the chips and then replace the cables.

Well, seems like this work might be over my head, but I'm willing to learn. Not sure which boards are which. Not sure which chips you're talking about and I dont have a diagram. I don't have any experience with moving chips, so I'm a bit reluctant to try this. I feel like I would need a diagram, some pics, and instructions on what chips I'm looking at, how to find them, and what to do. If anyone can help, I'd like to try.

In the meantime, because I know myself and how I'll prob break this...does anyone know where to find a tapper complete boardset or just a soundboard?

Found a few diagrams...wish I knew what to do with these chips. What is up with the security torx screws on the marquee holder?

With my Timber (same boardset) It was bad header pins and the associated connectors. Exact same error message and when those were replaced it has worked perfectly since then.

Yeah, I read that timber was the exact same board. Ok, do what exactly are header pins and what do they and the associated connectors look like? How did you fix...? Take them out and replace (how fo you remove) or did you clean somehow?

Your cp looks great! I didn't think to put it in the oven...I was just gonna put the new cpo over the top and use wood filler for the holes. How long and what temp did you put it in the oven?

We put the oven on 500 and put the cpo in for 1 minute ans 15 seconds. The second pic is how it looked..

Can anybody lend a hand with this info:

Header pins are the pins where the cables and connectors plug into. You can replace these pins but most likely reflowing solder will be the fix. I'd first replace those cables that connect each board. If no improvement, re-solder the header pins. Read up on how to solder and make sure you don't solder two pins together.

Even though this is a pinball doc, it's great info for basics on video games.

new ribbon cables?

ordered the new ribbon cables from bob roberts...they don't look right. the old connectors look like they hook up on almost a 90 degree angle. the new cables look a bit different. are these the right ones i wonder? attached are some pics of the inside of my tapper and some showing the new cables.

wrong ribbons?

am i missing something very easy with this? or did either bob or myself mix up the order?

Not an easy job

Ok, for those of you following...these ribbon cables do not fit tapper games although they are the only ones produced so you have to make them work. The way these things work are you have to align the same rows with the sane holes since. All the ribbons are theoretically connected. Problem is, there are bolts that go through the boards to keep them together...these get in the way and the ribbons cannot connect so you have to file them down. I haven't don't this yet and am fairly nervous about this, but they're only $25 parts so what the heck. Get out your gelled kneepads if you have them...I'm serious. That cabinet is very awkward and you have to get inside it to work on it...oh, and be careful of the sound board and power supply hanging on the wall...oh yeah, and all the connectors fitting in near impossible spaces between the sandwich of boards. Well, I guess this is one reason mcr games are difficult to work on. I'll let you know next time I feel like hurting my knees and back on the tapper ribbon cables.

Anyone have any advice before I give it another go??
