Hello, I was directed to a site via this board where I could purchase a Tapper FREEPLAY ROM chip.

http://www.hobbyroms.com/

I purchased the ROM and when it arrived I installed it on the middle board in location 1C and made certain the notches were lined up.

When I fired up the Tapper the screen read "ROM ERROR 1C"

I contacted the seller Stephen and he was very gracious and sent me out a replacement right away.

I got it today, installed it on the middle PCB board in location 1C with the notches lined up. Fired up the Tapper and... "ROM ERROR 1C"

Help, does anyone have any experience with this, what could I be doing wrong? My Tapper has a new modern power supply, could that be an issue. Could the ROM be burned backwards and lining up the notches is wrong, should I try switching it around?

Not sure what the issue is, but a ROM cannot be "burned backwards". The chip has a specific pinout that is not affected by the contents of the ROM. Look at the surrounding ROMs and make sure the one you're installing is in the same direction, generally they all point the same way. It is possible that the markings on the board are wrong or the socket is installed backwards (if that is marked).

Definitely DO NOT turn the rom around backwards.

My understanding is there are a couple versions of this rom patch.
Do you know if Steph has tried both versions for you?

Steph is a standup all around good guy by the way. :)

LOL! :)

Sorry, bro!

I would definitely talk to Stephen. Ask him if he got the patch from here:

http://users.rcn.com/jenison/mars/romhacks/

You might want to send him YOUR ORIGINAL rom and have him patch that ROM instead of patching whatever ROM file he has on file.

Ha! No worries, I'm sure somehow we'll get it worked out. I read there are two slightly different versions of the ROM, and if one doesn't work the other will. I think both have been the same so it must be the other.

I originally thought that the patch versions were for differences between Bud and Rootbeer Tapper. ( ...the patch is actually the same for both games, but the program code is different so you need to create game-specific eprom images )

In re-reading the info from Mark' site,
I see that there appears to be an "alternate" version for Bud and RB tapper,
(...with a different patch )
so I'll compile a new [Bud] eprom image and send that to you.

If that fixes the problem, then going forward,
I'll have to find a way to identify who has a "standard" Bud/RB Tapper,
and who has the "alternate" version
(...and find out what those differences are... )

Thanks,
Steph

I have no idea why it's not working...

You "must" have a one-of-kind Tapper ! ;-)

The only thing I can think to try
would be for you to send me your particular eprom,
I'll make a copy of it, and then apply the Free Play patch
to that copy (... that way, I don't alter your working "original" eprom ).

I'll also compare your eprom to a known-good Tapper file.

Who knows, you might indeed have a "special" version....

LMK,

Cheers,
Steph

Hey, Steph just letting you know I sent you back all the ROMS you made for me that didn't work. Hopefully another customer in the future can use them.

Thanks again!!!

Hey, Steph. Do you know if the Simpsons version of Tapper is compatible with the Free Play ROM? I installed Simpsons ROMs on my machine over the summer and got a bunch of garbage on the screen when I tried to add Free Play. When I removed the Free Play ROM and put the old one back in, it fired right up.

Coining up is no biggie, but it would be pretty sweet to have the best of both worlds.
