Hi

Got my chip from hobbyroms, quick service and a fair price.

I got the sandwhich boardset apart but most of my chip id's are badly faded

Can someone post or email me a pic of the location where this chip should go? Much appreciated.

[email protected]

Thanks
Darin

From the patch readme:
1) Remove the EPROM at location 1c on the CPU board (middle board of the MCR stack).

I can take a photo tonight if no one else does.

Thank you, I found the obvious location right away

Now after I took apart the stack Im not sure which way the black board harnesses line up since there are is only one row of pins but 2 rows on each harness and one extra slot.

Pics? Suggestions?

Here's a diagram of the location:

Your not sure how the connectors from the harness go back on the board? Is that what you mean?

Here are some photos of the PCB in the cab:

Hopefully those will do it for you.

Thanks so much for the pics.

What Im having a hard time with is getting these 3 black connectors right. There is only one row of pins, but 2 rows on each connector. There is also one less pin for the connector, so I need to line up the upper or lower row and figure out which set of slots on the connector should be left empty. Hope that makes sense?

Ever since I put the free play chip in it doesnt work (yes chip was put in correctly). But Im guessing I havent aligned these 3 black connectors properly.

Are you sure you got the right freeplay chip too? There are two versions.

Let me check my cables...

lay the 2 boards flat solder side down, so that the 3 sets of headers are facing each other, and the test connectors are facing the same direction. Looking at the pcb's from the edge one end of the connector should be tight against the board, and the other end up off the board. (iow you use what appears to be oppisite sets of holes in each end of the cable). Looking at the board from the top, make sure that you line the connectors up so that the extra hole is on the same side on each end of the cable.

...or more. I've tried both versions and neither worked in my Tapper!!!

Jay, I've figured it out...

You did indeed have the alternate rom set
but the alternate Free Play eprom image I had was wrong (wrong checksum...)

I've just now fixed that, and tested the alternate FreePlay image in MAME,
...and all is good.

So I'll be sending you the new chip right away..

--

Darin, same thing , I'll get the alternate rom to you right away.

BTW, does anyone know how to differentiate either rom set ?
(markings on the chips ? )

LMK,
thanks.

Sounds great Steph.

For anyone else on the board, Steph already has a great reputation around here. But I gotta tell you. Steph sold me the Tapper FREEPLAY ROM for $10.00 shipped. The frist one didn't work, sent another, it didn't work. We figured out the Tapper altenate business, sent one of them didn't work. I sent my original ROM to him to try and figure out why. Now Steph thinks he has it figured out and is sending a 4th ROM. Hopefully it will now work. But my point is, between burning additional ROMs and shipping them out and man hours working on them, Steph's profit margin is probably long gone. But I never got the impression he was EVER gonna quit untill we had figured this out. THAT is superior customer service!!!

A credit to the community, no doubt!!!

Most MCR games have different dates on the chip labels for different versions. Need to figure out the date->version mapping. Doesn't help much though if labels have become unreadable.

You could also require that they send you their original chip, then read it in, run the patcher (patcher will let you know which patch file it is compatible with), burn a new rom and return both.
