Solid cab, CPO, marquee, etc., supposedly played fine up until 6 months ago and now the graphics are glitched, but apparently still plays.

Maybe a simple ROM re-seat, or some of the ROMs gone bad? Or worse? I know nothing about Williams machines, except that Stargate's always kicked my ass.

We're at $200 now. Don't know if I should keep pressing or bail on it. It's an hour there and an hour back, and don't want to waste my time.

Flip a coin for me, KLOV.

I vote get it. I have a stargate and while I suck at it. It does get a lot of play. and 1 1/2 hours is nothing. I just drove 4 1/2 each way on a Friday night to pick up a game:)

Buuuuuyyyy it. You know you want to.

Sounds like a decent deal anyway and hopefully a reasonable fix to get working.

I love Defender.

I never got too far with Stargate, but I got one when I got the chance.

It doesn't get much play. So, judge how much you actually like it into your decision.

Dude, buy it!!! I bought a non working stargate, sent all my boards to yellowdog on this very message board and he fixed everything up really quick and really reasonable!!! My stargate works perfect now and the favorite of my collection!!!

Game sucks, is impossible for normal people to play, and you'll probably get sick of it within a few months. That's my opinion on the subject. :)

If it is in great shape, 8+ or better, get it. If not, pass. I doesn't sound like you really want it. I would be in the same boat. It's a good game to have, good but difficult play that you could gnaw on for years and not burn out on, but not a title I'd look for. But if a minty one comes along, I know I'd get it.

Sounds like a good deal to me. I paid more than that for mine..

If it's got a good cab and a good CPO, that will save you a ton of work. (How much is your time worth?)

Sometimes the problem could be just as simple as replacing the Molex connectors, the originals make poor contact when they are 30+ years old. Re-seating RAM and ROM and CPU chips also seem to work wonders.

YellowDog here on KLOV is great at repair if the boards do actually have issues.

Good luck with the purchase!

get a pic of the cabinet. The paint on the sides likes to crack and flake. Control panel usually has tons of cig burns..

Price sounds good. If its up on CL, I would drive up asap to see it/buy it.. If you have time, then wait for pics.

You nailed it - I'm not convinced I want the game itself, but if it's in great shape it seems I shouldn't pass it up.

Wife's not thrilled ("It doesn't even work? Where are you going to put it?") so that's a big consideration. Doesn't help that my Millipede Irish cab is my current project and is spread all over the basement.

Of course, I wouldn't have posted if I wasn't strongly leaning towards getting it, so... I've asked for more info on the condition. One man's solid is another man's soiled.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

If it doesn't work, I would wait to find a working one. Unless the cab is in really nice shape and you really do want this game.

You should also watch some gameplay video on youtube to see if you can picture yourself wasting time playing this game.

Might be board interconnect issues too that could be resolved by replacing connectors, resoldering, etc.

I would buy it...

If it's a Williams game that hasn't already been gone over by a collector, then it probably won't work. Being a Williams game, connectors, p/s rebuild, and RAM will probably do it though.

I'd pass. I don't care for Stargate. And if it was to try to make money it would be a toss-up if you can make any when it comes time to sell it.

This coming from the guy who in one of his video's said he likes Toobin, LOL Stargate is a great game, take time to learn it or Defender, lot's of tips on line or YouTube. Sorry had to vent when i say "Game Sucks" lol

Toobin' sucks too. :D

Though I don't quite agree with Blkdog7 that the game sucks, but it is extremely brutal. I owned one for about a year. I spent alot of time during the first three months playing and trying to get better. My HS maxed out at about 70K and then lost interest. I ended up selling it to fund another purchase (Sinistar - one of my favorite games EVER).

I guess it really depends on how much you like it and/or Defender. My most recent purchase was kinda the same deal. I have fond memories of playing Zaxxon as a youngster in the arcades BITD. Was never any GOOD at it, mind you, but I loved the graphics and always wished I was a better player than I was. I had NEVER heard of Super Zaxxon until about a month ago, when one appeared in my local Pawn America. I did some research on-line about it, including here, realized that it was a harder game than the original, but allegedly gameplay was nearly identical, and was given the impression although it wasn't a very popular title, a dedicated cabinet SZ was kind of a rarity. Went back to the store, realized it was a dedicated cab in damn close to mint condition, plugged it in to see if it worked, (it did so, perfectly! Nice bright monitor, too!), realized I could trade some old unwanted musical gear I had laying around the house taking up space, and use the proceeds from that to cover most of the cost of the game, haggled a little on price, grabbed the machine, and have been enjoying it ever since!

Now, is it my favorite game I own? No... I love it, but that title goes to my Ms. Pac/Galaga combo cocktail. Would it probably be the first game I sold if I ever absolutely HAD to? Probably... but again, I love the game and don't understand why everybody on here likes to diss it.

Guess I'm just trying to say only you can decide if it fits your unique criteria for owning a game... Defender was/is a LOT of fun, and I'm sure Stargate would probably provide you with many hours of a FUN and entertaining challenge once it's working!

Its one of those games that I really wish I hadn't got rid of. The money was just too tempting. I would jump on a $200 one with graphics issues. I would try the RAM or make sure the +5V is good. The RAM on those boards get cranky if the 5 is low. In any case, that is a good deal.
