Taito to JAMMA adapter (I'm bored and wanted a thread to feel special)

Got my parts in from Bob today... wanted to start on a happy note before I dug into the BattleZone monitor (which I have a feeling is going to suck... not an easy fix this time).

So... decided to finally convert my Jungle Hunt cab that was converted to Elevator Action, then Jamma'd to Empire City, then used as a Konami 36 pin cabinet (by me this time)... BACK to Elevator Action. I had the EA board here for a while, figured I might as well do something with it... plus the adapter will let me finally work in my Alpine Ski board and see what's up with that heap.

So... yeah.

So far I've done just enough for audio and video... haven't done and coin or CP wires yet.

Yeah, I know there are places that sell them... but the cheapest I've seen is from Spaeth and, while I'm sure they're great, they're also $40. Some other places have them for double that! ... screw that, this one is about $12 in parts, if that.

The wave at the top of the monitor won't adjust out... no idea why, I don't worry about it too much. And convergence on the monitor sucks because the yoke windings have been mangled somehow... again, I don't worry about it too much.

Anywho... bored, and wanted a thread... I'll post more as I work on it more. Just a slow day here.

Nice adapter. I was thinking about making one myself for my test rig. My Elevator Action boards also have an edge connector on the opposite side. It looks like it only supplies +5v and Gnd. Is that not needed?

Also, my monitor did that same thing. Just played w/ the horizontal hold and fixed it.

That's with the H.Hold adjusted as best as it will go. I just don't worry about it too much, I'll get around to figure'ng it out eventually... or just swapping out the monitor completely as the one in that cabinet is all sorts of beat up.

The edge on the bottom of the stack isn't really needed. You can run something to there if you want (I think it's just to make sure that voltage is evenly distributed). It runs fine with just the wires to the header on the top board and nothing to the edge connector on the bottom of the stack.

Finished it up enough for now. I still don't have the service switch or anything like that wired into it... but I never really use that for anything, so it's good enough for now.

The coin switches don't work, but I believe that's a board issue and not an issue with the adapter as I've double and triple checked the wiring (unless the pinout on CrazyKong.com is wrong)

Ignore that picture of the adapter, ran two pairs of wires wrong. Left and Right are swapped on the Taito board. JAMMA goes Up, Down, Left, Right as you're reading the pins down... on Taito it goes Up, Down, Right, Left... go figure.

Anywho, squared that away and all... still can't figure out the credits though... I think it uses some feedback or something from the coin lockouts (which aren't connected on my cabinet)... so there's an AND gate that needs that feedback on one of the inputs. I got tired of looking at the damned thing and just jumpered the two inputs together since the other input is the line from the coin switch... so now when it gets tripped it takes care of both inputs on that gate and credits the machine up.

I'd still like to know how to get around that though using just the adapter. Que sera.

For the Taito to JAMMA adaptor that I made (Front Line), I connected the coin mech switches on the JAMMA side of the adaptor to the service switch on the Taito side. Taito games are funny with the coin switches.

For Front Line, the service switch even makes the coin up noise (if I'm remembering right).

Good luck.

Yeah, I was thinking about doing that... but I had already ran the two wires for CoinA and CoinB... no idea why though since I only have 1 coin switch in the cabinet. ... le sigh... just got carried away with running wires.

I should probably just switch it over to that since getting to the 2 pins I have to jumper is a PITA (they're on IC28 under the ROM board)... And I don't really like the idea of having to jumper them together on every board I get. I only have Elevator Action and Alpine Ski right now... but the lack of an adapter is the only reason I haven't been going out of my way to collect more of these boards.
