saw an ad for a superman (1988?) and was wondering what you guys thought about it. I want to get a game that both of my daughters can play at the same time (6 and 8). but then when they get tired of it in 6 months, be able to trade, and not have more junk sitting around the house. any thoughts. just bought a afterburner last weekend, so i am treading on thin ice with the wife, so the kids gotta love it if i'm gonna stick my meck out on this.

I like the game but I also grew up as a huge Superman fan. It's very repetative between flying stages and side scrolling stages with only a few changes in the background graphics and enemies. It's also not a hugely popular game so you *may* have trouble getting rid of it or trading it. Two people can play at the same time with player 2 controlling a red superman. If you get it cheap enough then you probably can't go wrong, but I wouldn't pay more than $200 unless it's in really nice shape. If you had a JAMMA cabinet you could just buy the board and swap it out possibly.

My recollection is that it has very generic gameplay... move along, punch the bad guys that come out at you, and fight a "boss" character at the end of the level. Same basic concept as most side-scrolling fighters of its era. Very unmemorable and little replay value.

I remember that when I saw it I was surprised that DC would have allowed Superman to be given such a basic treatment given the character's heritage... similar to what they allowed with Batman around the same time.

I think I saw it at the Crab Towne meet up and I didn't even drop a quarter in it to play it. My vote for a good two simultaneous 2 player game would be Contra, TMNT, Or Metal Slug all of which you can easily find a home for after your done with the game. For Simple game play for little kids I would go with TMNT could even get the 4 player version and play the game with the kids. Or Rampage is a 3 player game which was one of my favorite ones as a kid ans goes fairly cheap.

I think it's an ok game, but it doesn't really seem like it was designed to be Superman. It's like Taito took a work in progress beat em up and changed the main character(s) and music to fit the Superman license. I don't even think there are any Superman villians as bosses. The Konami games are much better cartoon/comic book multiplayer beat-em-ups. (X-men, Simpsons, TMNT series)

My daughters are about the same age and they like playing the NeoGeo. Almost everything is 2 player and multicarts are pretty cheap. I don't let them play fighting games, but they enjoy Spinmaster, Puzzle Bobble(s)/Puzzle De Pon, Neo Mr. Do, Bomberman, Capt Tomaday, Windjammers and a few others.

+1 to everything he said. I mean c'mon! Superman is a totally wuss in the game! Gets the crap knocked outta him by everything. I think falling rocks hurt him too. Total BS. It will get old real quick.
The cab is pretty cool with the arts, but I wouldn't pay more than $200 for one.

There was a vendor on eBay who had one in the same Taitio cab that Double Dragon comes in and it had full side art. I've heard before that was the dedicated version.

+1 again. It's even worse than Batman.
Ouch!

Oh come on, it's not THAT bad. :)

There was a dedicated one on CL here recently that was in a DD-style Taito cab. At least I think it was dedicated though I've only seen kits in person. It was blue and had full side art. Kind of a cool looking cab if you're into comic books, but yes, the game sucks big time.

Someone on here made a custom cab with side art and he used actual pages of comic books to cover the bezel, IIRC. Pretty cool, but the game still blows :)

The only good Superman game

When avgn does the punches perfect I fell out!

As for the arcade Im a huge superman fan and would own one because of that, BUT as far as games go, it was a good arcade game in the sense you could plop a quarter in and play for a few mins win some small entertainment...but once that quarter was over with....you wouldn't put another in it. That sort of thing says I wouldn't want to own it at my house with out being a superman fan, because even though I am, I wouldn't play the game very much, if at all.
