Could someone here provide some advice about a Taito Renegade sound issue?

In the game, there are two types of sound. The sounds that are clearly electronic in origin, such as the background soundtrack or punch or kick sounds. Then there are what I would call "sampled" sounds, things like voices and motorcycle noises. The "sampled" sounds either don't work at all, or only work for the first few minutes when the game is turned on cold.

Anyway, I love this game and really want those sounds to work again. I have replaced all the caps on the boards, and that's about all I know to do. Is there a chip I should replace? Any advice would be great. Also, there are no schematics that I know of.

Ok tonight I looked the board over again and found what I believe to be the sound amp chip. It has a smallish heat sink bolted to it. I reflowed the solder on it and the sounds were good for almost 15 minutes. For a moment I thought the thing was fixed, then they slowly dropped out again.

I'll post a picture of the sound amp area of the board. So could somebody throw me a Bone?

channelmaniac is on this board and he's really sharp when it comes to this stuff...i copied this from his repair website...it might give you a little info...

Model: Renegade
Symptom: Dead

Board was dead - garbage on screen. Replaced the 68A09 CPU and the game would run but glitch and lock up. Replaced the 6502A CPU and the game would play but had no music. Voice worked fine. Replaced a bad op-amp in the audio amplifier section and played a game to test it.

his website is www.newlifegames.net

The two chips, one is socketed (SK3465) and the other (HA17558) both cross reference as NTE778A. They are both dual operational amplifiers. So, should I spend a couple of bucks and try replacing these?

The Yamaha chip, looks to be an FM synthesizer chip, they were used in the Commadore 64 =) But I can't seem to find a source for them online, or a cross reference. Any ideas?

I could very well have a used pull Yamaha chip here. I can take a look today.
Have you tried working the volume pot a little to see if its working properly? You mentioned the sound faded away. That points more to a cap issue or pot. Was there any static when it was working?

Friday I'll replace the two op amps, if that doesn't help I'd like to try the yamaha chip if you can find one.

The sounds and music stay but the voices and special noises fade. They crackle and there is a little static, and there is an odd noise whenever they should be playing. Almost like a very high frequency noise.

Success! I replaced IC 83 and IC 95 both with TLO82's from radio shack. Sounds are all back and worked through 3 long games. IC 95 was the bad chip and already had a socket installed.
