So I've got a Taito rotary controller, and the knob is spinning loose. If I pull up on it, it seems to catch and it will turn the rotary mechanism, but if it isn't sitting just right, it slips again and spins free.

Anybody have any experience with these? My Wild Western manual has an exploded view of the controller, and I took it all apart, but the knob doesn't come off the shaft at all.

If you look closely I think you will see a pin that holds the knob to the shaft, you have to tap the pin out.( I'm sure there is, allthough I haven't looked at one for a while)

There should be a spring there that pushes the knob back UP after you have pressed it??

I was looking for this pin, as it is shown in the manual, but I cannot see it. Is it a hollow pin? It's either stuck in the hole or its missing. I've pushed in the hole with a small alan wrench, but it doesn't go all the way through. I'll try and get a picture of what mine looks like.

The spring is there, and when the knob is catching it gets pushed back up, but it doesn't keep the knob from slipping and spinning free.

Ok. So either, the pin is the hollow looking thing at the lip of the hole in the below picture and it has broken off, or the pin is missing entirely.

If the pin is broke... not sure there's much I can do here. If it's missing, how the heck would I go about getting a replacement?

Eitherway, the lack of pin is causing the free spin of the knob, so at least I know that much.

Try and drill or punch the broken pin out of the shaft and replace with a firm fitting nail or something similar (cut to length)

I'm not sure why that knob doesn't slip off the shaft?? have you used a bit more force to try and remove it....it should come off??

I just looked.....
One of the ones I have here has not got a pin in it( I can see through it) but it still won't slide off the shaft  you might have to grip the shaft in a vice and try tapping the knob off??

Home depot may have the pins - they have a good selection of "roll pins" in the fasenters aisle. A bag of them should be around 2 - 3, so you can buy a few different sizes to get the right match.

Mine has that little pin but for the life of me i cant remove it. Fortunately it spins ok so i just leave it as is.

So I'm still not sure if that hollow thing in there is the broken pin or not, however,I found the smallest nail I had and tapped it in there. It was a smidge to big and wouldn't go all the way through without a fight, but it did go in enough to secure the knob to the shaft. I think I'm just going to to the hardware store and get a slightly smaller one and tap it through there. Thanks guys.

I might see if I have a drill bit small enough to fit in there, but I don't think I do.

Yeah - a better design would of been some small set screw (imo). The original roll pin is VERY hard to remove. To replace it (your dilemma) i think the hardware store will have a small part. Good luck!

That is the pin... Its a hollow tube of metal with a slit down the side. Its slightly bigger than the hole in order to stay in via compression. To get it out find something you can hook on the edge to tap it through.

Ok. So then my problem is that the pin is broken off inside the hole. Not sure I will be able to get it out although that would be ideal.

The signs of abuse on some of my games make me sad. I can just see some kid trying to rip the knob off the machine and the pin breaking.

If you send over to me in Seattle, I could probably fix the switch. Please provide your e-mail address and we can discuss. I am making replacement units and am familiar with the old units. Hard to fix. Thanks Jay
