Taito Lunar Rescue Cocktail TOEI monitor screen horizontal slide to overlap

*Sigh*

I was pretty disappointed to see this after moving one of my "grails" home recently. Of course, the monitor looked fine before we moved it. We even padded it up really nicely in our Ranger!

(I don't know the code to post images on the forum without doing it through an attachment, so the photos will be at the bottom)

At first, the game seems to play fine for a time between 10-30 minutes, with a little bow or warp here and there, but then it gets weird.

The little TOEI monitor in my Lunar Rescue has a couple of issues: a slightly bowed display, some display warping when the game changes screens, and horizontal display sliding to the point that it overlaps like playing Asteroids. From the Player 1 side, I believe it slides to the left.

It appears that the game itself runs smoothly. Unfortunately, the monitor is faltering. Does anyone know if this can be fixed? I've heard that some parts in these monitors are extremely difficult to replace. Also, I can't find a monitor manual or schematic ANYWHERE!

(Just as a Plan B) If the monitor can't be repaired, is there another CRT alternative? Maybe another cocktail monitor of a more popular brand? A monitor from a mini cabinet? A Sony PVM? I'm also not sure if it's a 13" or a 14".

If anyone could point me in the right direction on this, it would be much appreciated. I don't have any experience working on monitors, so I'm hoping that even a dummy like me can do it. I really love this game and plan on keeping it even if it ends up a big pretty paperweight for a while, but I want to learn how to work on my games as well!

Thanks to anyone that can help. Here's how the game starts up...

And this is how it looks after running for 10-30 minutes... I know that Vertical Hold controls vertical scrolling, but I don't know if Horizontal Hold controls horizontal scrolling (if you could call my monitor issue "scrolling"). I also don't want to mess with any sensitive monitor settings.

To quote the Beatles and my poor Lunar Rescue astronauts: HELP!... I need somebody!

You just need to adjust the vertical hold on your monitor....

This is not a major fault not tothe point where you'd be wantign to repalce the whole monitor, sheesh :) Everything can be repaired, but right now it just looks like you need to adjust it...

I was actually going to contact you after hearing how much you know about these Taito Cocktails. UKVAC is a great resource!

Ah! Is it that simple?? How embarrassing... So, the Vertical Hold adjusts the scrolling like a regular horizontal TV? Can this be done while the game is running? Or, should I turn it on, check the scroll, shut off, adjust Vertical Hold, Turn on, repeat until no scrolling? Are there any precautions I should take?

I hope it's that easy! Sorry if I seem panicky, the only experienced techs for arcades are up north from this area.

Thank you for the speedy reply! Is there anything else I should do to help it run properly?

Ok, I admit that the latter question was pretty dumb. The cocktail is too tightly packed to safely do monitor adjustments while running. I just remembered that you should never adjust your game while it's running.

The Vertical Hold seems to be working at the moment, however I'd forgotten about the screen display shaking. Can this be remedied with a cap kit for a Taito Space Invaders Part II monitor? Do you have any suggestions on that P-Man?

In response to P-Man's PM: I didn't know you could adjust the monitor while it was running. I'll have to try your thin rubber glove idea. It's pretty cramped in that cocktail!

Curse my big hands...

UPDATE: The Vertical Hold suggestion cured the screen warp and scrolling! Now, for the screen shakes... The shakes seem to go away over time, but is it possible that this could be tuned up with a cap kit? It's nice that the tube has NO burn!

If you look inside of this game, it's pretty dusty. 30 years of grime. I've seen a few UK posts about guys taking their entire cocktails apart and cleaning them up. Does this kind of overhaul need to be done, or are there certain parts I can take out to clean up in order to help the game run more efficiently?

I can post photos of the interior if necessary. I owe you a sincere thank you P-man! I'm glad I didn't have to make any unnecessary amateur-like "repairs".

Final Update: Changed power supply setting from 100V (Japan) to 110V (U.S.). Monitor was flickering and shaking because it wasn't running at full capacity.

Toei monitor is running rock solid! No issues whatsoever.

I highly recommend talking to P-man (Andy from Andysarcade.net). He knows his Taito Cocktails, and more!
