Taito Jungle King - ✿☆♧ Baby's First Restore ♧☆✿

it's 2017 ... time for me to grow a pair and start one of these threads.

it's gonna be a long, image-heavy thread. for me it's not just about putting a Jungle King together but learning a buncha stuff and doing a buncha stuff arcade'ish that i've never done before. it will also be an online journal and my kick-in-the-butt to keep this project going forward.

any helpful (or humorous!) comments are all greatly appreciated. i have no idea what the hell i'm doing but hopefully it'll be fun, educational, and - when it's all done - i'll have a proper Jungle King.

phase 1 - assessment

long-story short:

bought a "Jungle Hunt" right before the new year for $100. guy told me it had worked fine for years, he moved it, it stopped working, had too many other hobbies and wanted to get rid of it.

i was lucky, saw the ad minutes after posting and was there in the AM with cash and a truck.

the seller tells me that he's 100% sure the board is Jungle King (with the Tarzan-type character and distinctive yelp at the beginning of the game and everything)

here it is in the garage tonight. unless i'm missing something, i'm thinking this was a Crazy Climber in its former life ...

removed the CP ... they chopped the front of cabinet to secure the joystick/CP for Jungle Hunt :(

i can only assume that's a CC CPO underneath. not sure if any other hardware visible in the pics woulda been "stock" on a JK/JH ...

some of the guts ... dude didn't wanna bother with repairing the CRT (which he generously gave me) so he stuck the LCD and adapter in there.

i'm trying to determine what was original and what woulda over the years been stuck in there by operators/owners ...

the original CRT monitor that was inside that CC cab was one of the following: WG 19K4901 or 19K4906 or 19K4951 or 19K4956

dawg, i feel you. this restore will begin with the insides and progress with finding the right stuff for the outside.

i'm keeping the cab, but the guts are supposedly all JK.

never forget, bro, it's what's inside that counts. an after-school special in the 80s taught me that.

so you're making 2 projects out of this? the older taito cabs (crazy climber) and the
new taito cabs (jungle king) were not compatible in any way. the marquee size is different,
the control panel is different (which is why they butchered the poor CC cab), the coin door
and buckets are obviously different, everything is different!

thread 1: crazy climber restore using this cab! :)
thread 2: jungle king restore with newer, correct, green cab.

in that case, i'll take what's behind Curtain no.2 then!

This isn't the popular opinion, but I'd clean it up and source Jungle King art. The oranges in the art will tie the cab color into the overall scheme. It's no worse than seeing a JK cab converted to EA (which doesn't match color schemes at all). I'd also have to tidy up the front of that cab where the op chopped it up cuz that would bug me.

i thought about that (it was a JK at one point, after all) but i'd rather see these guts in a proper green Taito cab AND (even if it's not me) see a Crazy Climber (a rare'ish cabinet) back being enjoyed again as well.

is the bootleg thing a deal breaker/killer on putting it back in a proper JK cab with appropriate bezel, marquee, etc?

i think i can live with the bootleg thing as long as it sounds and plays like a proper JK

That looks to be an original early Taito power supply.

The Jungle King board is a bootleg.

I'm almost sure the pinout is the same. I've got plenty of the bootleg boards, but it's been a while since I've hooked them up.

I think they have captive ribbon cables that prevent the individual boards in the stack from being tested with non-bootleg boards. Maybe that's the incompatibility I was thinking of.
