Taito Alpine Ski clean up/semi-restore

So I finally took my joystick apart last night. I had cleaned up the panel years ago, but this was before new grommets were available. I disassembled the stick, it had a sloppiness to it, like the grommet was torn. Surprisingly it wasn't, but the shaft had a lot of play in the grommet. (pic below). I figured the shaft was worn, but when I tried a newer/clean grommet out of a newer microswitch stick, it fit tight. The metal in the grommet was worn out.

Will scrub all the parts, polish the stick again, use the nice grommet, and add a little grease where metal touches metal.

Below, nice grommet on left, worn one on right

Wow, it's amazing what those sticks went through. Now get that white balltop back to pristine white!

I found the furniture feet for this as I was digging through my parts shipments. I tossed them in with the new rubbers for my EFTLW pin. So I took a few minutes and tipped the girl over, installed the feet, then moved it in the game room. I stuck baby in the corner and called the kids down to play a few games. Here are a few pics:

very nice clean-up/restore. Love that blue and happy for you that you didn't have to re-stencil.

I need to get new shiny carriage bolts for all my current and future taito cabs. The look snazzy against the fresh CPO and black paint.

Thanks! Yes, the carriage bolts pop when they are shiny and new. But for the front part, I just took the old bolts, put them in the drill and sanded/polished them. They turn out almost as nice... as long as you're willing to spend a few minutes on each one.

Did you clean up the rats nest inside the cab? I was also wondering why there were 2 iso transformers. Looks great!

Thanks! I went through the rat's nest and separated what was true Alpine Ski wiring and what was jamma wiring. I don't have the full harness, as it was cut off in a few places, but I do have the filter board and most of the original power brick. I have a line on an original Alpine Ski harness locally but I still don't have an original board. I cleanly wired it for JAMMA and it's running an ArPiCade currently.

You've inspired me to work on mine tonight. About half the coin door wires are cut or shredded looking, incl test switch. Put good door beside it and comparing where they go to connector, replacing wires and connectors. Fun...

Good luck! Sounds like a lot of work. On another note, I really like where they put the on/off switch in the bottom, left front corner of the cab... but DAMN, is it a pain to get to it from inside the cabinet with a monitor installed!

Loved seeing this again! Anyone have an extra white Wico joystick or 2 for sale??

And did you sand yours to make it shine??

Great work!

Thanks! I think I might have an extra white Wico shaft around. Send me a PM so I remember to look when I get home on Sunday evening. Tighe spit polished the balltop for me. I actually think he has a thread on it somewhere here.
