Taito Alpine Ski clean up/semi-restore

The coin door looks great. Would you willing to share the custom inserts/file? I like that.. I just recently cleared the junk in front of my not-now-working AS. Need to recap the monitor, get a boardset working, and the grommet in the joystick is shot. Lots to do. Yours in inspiring!

Thanks! I think the attached image will work for you. Just make sure it prints at .627 x 1.17 inches.

I was able to rebuild the base over the weekend. Man, what a piece of shit the original bases were! Instead of the original rabbet jointed MDF, I used 1x4 poplar, mitered the corners and blocked it with 2x2's. I then painted it black while it was attached... just like they did at the factory!

I re-attached the metal corner brackets after re-painting them black. I will add the little nylon furniture feet when I find the set that I bought a few months ago.

Just two minor details to take care of and the Alpine Ski is ready for the game room. I still have to find the furniture feet I bought months ago and tap them on and then get a few 12v bayonet bulbs for the coin door. I thought I had a box of 1813's left but apparently I ran out.

I finished the rest of wiring, wired up the control panel and coin door and then installed the t-molding. I also experimented with waxing the black stencil art on the sides. The waxed black was slightly shinier than the non-waxed side, but not enough of a difference to do it on the other side. So just a cleaning with Simple Green sufficed.

Here are a few quick pics in the garage, I'll get some better ones once it's in the game room:

Looks great. I noticed the stick on mine is really sloppy. Going to pull it apart and probably use a used grommet I have that isn't torn. I suspect the one on the game is busted. Also, the coin door wires going to the test switch are cut and frayed, so will need to repair that.

If anyone needs a replacement control panel harness for this or other Taito games, I plan to make some up in the near future.

Dang! That's purrrrdy. How'd you attach the finished base to the bottom?

Thanks! This beautiful joystick of mine got the royal treatment- new repro grommet and a full shine and polish from Tighe.

Thanks. As I mentioned before in this thread, I would've really liked to do a full restore with stenciling but the cabinet was just too nice to tear down all the way. The large scratch on the left side bugs me, but once it's in between two games, I hope to forget about it!

Another thing, my AS cabinet has nasty looking carriage bolts. I bought bags of the..I think 4 different size/length bolts cover the game for doing some Taito restoration/builds. If you bought at Lowes, it wouldn't be cheap, but buying bulk on Ebay, you can find stainless carriage bolts with smooth heads for pretty cheap, shipped free, etc.. At least using those on the control panel is a nice upgrade.

Ah, didn't even think of that. I suppose I took the long way out. I put every bolt in my drill and sanded them then polished them... one by one.

So I finally took my joystick apart last night. I had cleaned up the panel years ago, but this was before new grommets were available. I disassembled the stick, it had a sloppiness to it, like the grommet was torn. Surprisingly it wasn't, but the shaft had a lot of play in the grommet. (pic below). I figured the shaft was worn, but when I tried a newer/clean grommet out of a newer microswitch stick, it fit tight. The metal in the grommet was worn out.

Will scrub all the parts, polish the stick again, use the nice grommet, and add a little grease where metal touches metal.

Below, nice grommet on left, worn one on right
