Systematic Collecting - Putting together sets or a series

Definitely a bunch of my collecting skews this direction.

On the PCB/cart front, I have:

Every MVS, Atomiswave, and NGPC Metal Slug game. Plus the fan patch MS2 Turbo.
Every MVS, HNG64, Atomiswave, and NGPC Samurai Shodown game. Plus the fan patch of MVS SS3.
Every MVS, HNG64, and NGPC Fatal Fury game.
All three Parodius JAMMA PCBs.
All three Strikers 1945 JAMMA PCBs.
Most of the Raiden series. I have 2, DX, Fighters, Fighters 2, Fighters Jet. Missing the first one (which I don't like) and III/IV, because I don't have a Type X PCB.

Cabinets are a bit harder, but I have:

All three B&W Exidy drivers: Death Race, Destruction Derby, and Alley Rally.
Every production golden age Atari Cabaret: Missile Command, Asteroids, Battlezone, Asteroids Deluxe, Tempest, Dig Dug, Centipede.
Tetris and Klax cabarets
Edit: Forgot that I have Atari CTF-1, PAT 9000, and HP9001 test fixtures.

For arcades i collect only the vintage gmes i played and enjoyed as a kid. My earliest arcade is stunt cycle. My latest would probably be mario bros. I am not a fan of anything mid to late 80's and above. Mainly because when i hit around 15 (1985) or so arcades started phasing out and the ones that stuck around no longer carried the classics...PLUS i kinda out grew them at that time and didt care about arcades anymore...my interest changed.

For pinball i'm down for any solid state that i find is fun. ....and reasonably priced.

1) All Atari Vectors (with the exception of ESB since I have a kit in my Star Wars, and I don't feel like I need both an Asteroids and an Asteroids Deluxe for a home arcade)

Yes, you do need both an Asteroids and Asteroids Deluxe, AD is a gorgeous cabinet with the backlighting.

How about all Cinematronics vector games? You'll never have all of them running at once if you manage to get 'em.

Or you could really be daring and get all of Sega's vectors. That would deem your house a fire hazard now wouldn't it. :D

I would like a Sega / Gremlin collection, I like a lot of those old fake 3D type games like Buck Rogers, Turbo, that sub game, etc. and of course regulars like Monaco GP.

A Midway vector collection is easily achievable.

Is that a fuckin' awesome deal, or what? And some of them actually fuckin' signed by some fucker(s). :54:

Well fuck, that just fuckin' changes everything ...

BACK ON TOPIC: I also collect based on another cabinet style - MH(ded)/FF(ur)/I,Robot/ROTJ share "similar" types/styles of cabinet. These "pedestal" type cabs are cool, IMHO. :)

All of my games are movie based. I'm a movie nerd and growing up in the 80's I was always drawn to the games where I could be a part of the movie. I've had an afinity for the rarer titles and have nearly finished my game room. Soon to be pictured here for the first time. Aliens, Star Trek, empire strikes back, Rambo III, willow, robocop 1 & 2, Firefox.

Same here, but my collection does skew Atari heavy.

I also have a small tank themed collection including the original B&W Tank , T-mek , Battlezone , Vindicators , Assault , and Sarge . This thread is really interesting to me & still hoping to hear others chime in on how you've grouped games together .

Thats awesome. I hope to have a submarine themed collection at some point. Something about games with submarines just rocks.
Currently I have Sea Wolf and SUBS, but hope to get more like Sea Raider, Depthcharge and a few others.

Tokyo Wars and Cybersled or GTFO.

Cool question!

I do certainly enjoy the color vectors, but I know I'll never have the space for a complete collection.

I did manage to put together a complete set of all four Atari production Cabaret vectors: Tempest, Battlezone, Asteroids and Asteroids Deluxe. That's pretty fun.

I'd also really like to get a complete set of Williams Minis, but I know that's potentially a very long-term proposition.

I've been doing some soul-searching on this topic lately, and trying to figure out where my "player" instincts and my "collector" instincts part ways. I kind of feel like I shouldn't keep games around that don't get played, either by me or "regulars". On the other hand, part of me loves the feeling that I have completed a set. Like many of us, space is the most important currency, and I'm still not sure where the balance point is.

there is a stargate cabaret just listed in the for sales

Being poor and having no space keeps things under control, sorta?

I started doing this when I first got into the hobby (collecting all the R-Type games) and then realized that it was dumb wasting the space of a refrigerator and money for games that not only do I not like (R-Type LEO is a piece of trash garbage game) but limiting diversity of gameplay jumping from cab to cab. So I'd rather have more diversity and have a totally different gameplay experience jumping from cab to cab than collecting every game in a series (unless using a board switcher and using multiple PCBs in one cab in which I wish I would of done with R-Type II instead of making a dedicated cab for it). Asteroids Deluxe is an absolute favorite of mine (if I had to limit myself to down to one cab in the future, Asteroids Deluxe would probably be the one that I kept - it's literally my favorite classic arcade game/cab from an all around aspect at the moment) but I wouldn't own an original Asteroids (I actually turned one down playing blind for $125) or a Blasteroids. Also being limited for space for these things can sometimes be viewed as a blessing in disguise. 1) It makes me choose my games much more wisely making sure I'm only going to buy games that I enjoy playing repetitively and 2) It forces me from getting out of control with collecting because I just don't have space. Really, my six game collection sometimes seems too much and my R-Type II just sits unplayed and is basically just a dust collecting collectors piece. Yea it might be rare to see a dedicated and fully restored R-Type II but it's basically the same game as the original and a Mike's Arcade 2-in-1 JAMMA switcher and having both games in one cab would suffice and make more sense.
