Systematic Collecting - Putting together sets or a series

The more I collect the more I get interested in more specific areas or maybe a collect a series or type of game. I was curious to hear what other people collect in a systematic way as in putting together a series or set of games.
For instance maybe collecting all the games in the Donkey Kong series.
Or maybe trying to get one each of all the different Street Fighters.
Maybe collecting all the games that came in a certain cabinet style or from a specific manufacturer like Williams games that all look awesome in a row.
Maybe your putting together a set of more off the beaten path game manufactures that are rarer and less mainstream.
Its a different kind of collecting than just acquiring whatever games show up on Craigslist, and theres a real thrill and sense of achievement when you add to or complete a set.
I would love to hear what other people are working on putting together or have collected.

I like all kids of games, but there are a few series or subjects that I try to get one of each or complete a set.

My three main ones are

1) All Atari Vectors (with the exception of ESB since I have a kit in my Star Wars, and I don't feel like I need both an Asteroids and an Asteroids Deluxe for a home arcade)

2) Don Bluth laserdisc games (Dragons Lair, Dragons Lair II and Space Ace).

3) Midway Series with Timber, Tapper and Domino Man.

Someones looking forward to completing their Steve Meyer collection soon lol. You know me on this one....all Aliens franchise games. Including pachinko, pachislo, arcade, pinball, slots, the whole shabang. I also did the complete metal slug series. I guess that kinda counts lol. I'd love to do vectors but damn would that be costly lol, however i do favor my vectors over other games in the line up. Not into other genres however like fighters to collect a series of those. Now a Kee games /Atari Tank collection would be amazing!!!!!!

When I started I was only interested in the games I played as a kid. After getting the Asteroids I really wanted I got a good deal on an Asteroids Deluxe.
I now really want a space duel next to them.
This will probably continue and might cross over into some Sega vectors.

Haven't begun this process yet, but I've been kicking around getting all of the Street Fighter II variations (WW, CE, Hyper, Super) and sticking them all in my Dynamo HS5.

Also have a multi MK switcher and toyed with getting all the MK's. But I don't really like the idea of playing a game in a cab dedicated to a different game. I.e MK3 PCB in my MKII cab.

Also would love to collect all of the Midway Sport games and the Konami 4 players. Can anyone guess what era I grew up in?

I also made a really well done MAME cabinet with a CRT that plays every game I want to collect just fine, which is what I keep going back and forth with.

Bottom line, in a perfect world, I would own a dedicated cabinet of each game and then I would be happy.

Exactly the same for me, I started out to just get a red tent with super mario bros. That's the one game I loved in the arcade as a kid.. After I got one, I ended up collecting every Nintendo VS. game for the red tent. https://imgur.com/a/sO05k

If money and room was no object I'd want the top 10 bally midway games from '82-'83. Tron, Mappy, Spy Hunter, Tapper etc.. Fun games and beautiful cabinets.

Oh definitely. Sadly, something such as that will remain a fantasy for me unless I win the lottery and suddenly have the space to put a bunch of cabs in there.

I would LOVE to have a collection of MK1, MK2, MK3, UMK3 (In an MK3 Cab) and MK4 in minty fresh and working condition.

Would love a set of DK/DKJr/DK3 cabinets from Nintendo.

Also would love a Giant Moon Pneumatic SF1, regular 6-button SF1, SF2:WW, SF2:CE, SF2:HF, etc. etc. each in their own cabs. SF2:WW would be a generic 19" Dynamo since there were no dedicated cabs, SF2:CE would be in a Capcom Big Blue, SF2:HF would be in a 3-KOAM red z-back cabinet, and then the Big Blues would be used for much of the CPS2 games.

Still, that would require a HUGE storage space and a LOT of money sent freighting stuff out and buying the cabs, etc. at near 40, I might not have enough time left in life to even find and acquire all of them and be able to enjoy them. lol.

I kind of started a Star Wars collection.

I have the upright SW with the Empire kit, Return of the Jedi and am getting a Data East Star Wars pinball.

I'm not really interested in the newer SW stuff though and so I think it will stop there.

All Atari Vectors, and in particular GRAV/BW/SD/Q/(SD->MH) which share a similar cabinet profile, all in a row. :)

Here's a nice example: (though I would have put LL and AST beside each other, and I tend to place them in chronological order) (OCD)

BTW, you are SO WRONG to not have dedicated ASTEROIDS and ASTEROIDS DELUXE in your home arcade. Both are unique yet compliment each other. (Mine are all multi's too, and that's OK). LOL

I was always a big fan of Raiden. I'm finally wrapping up putting all the Raiden games (including Viper Phase 1) in a Dynamo HS27 with custom graphics.

I wouldn't say anything I do in this hobby is systematic. Probably would characterize it more as whimsical, compulsive, opportunistic and chaotic.

I have all the games of Pac-Man Fever album except Defender. I have passed on Defender thus far because I have Stargate; all except Berzerk were acquired w/o that goal in mind but now it is kind of a goal.

Have tried to finish metal slug series (missing MS3 I think), Williams row is within reach (minus blaster probably).

I love (american) football so thought about collecting football games from atari, tecmo, leland, bally NFL laser, blitz, madden etc but they wouldn't get played much and take up too much room.

I agree on Asteroids and AD. Can't seem to split those up myself.

Oh my other motivation is to be a "cool kid" and enemy of VAPs so this is truly inspiring! you know I jest.

All things Galaga!

So far have upright that I'm restoring. Namco Class of 1981 version, cocktail. Working on finding a cabaret.

Also have a original Galpus on the block in line for a resto. Galaga 88 PCB that I need to find a cab for.

I think it would be cool some day to have a complete arcade line up as follows:

SERIES
1. Galaxian (1979)
2. Galaga (1981)
3. Gaplus (1984) : also known in the USA as "Galaga 3"
4. Galaga '88 (1987)
5. Galaga Arrangement (1995) : part of "Namco Classics Collection Vol.1" - I dont know if this was ever in a decided cab? I like the 2 player option though as I think it's cool.
6. Galaga Assault (2016)[4] - Yes, I will own one some day. :)

Does this count?

I have an Omega Race upright.
I have an Omega Race cabaret.
I have an Omega Race cockpit.
I don't care to have an Omega Race cocktail ... but that would make a complete set. ;)

This collection makes total sense to me and I will probably eventually have something similar.

I have a good start on this one. I havea Galaxian, Gaplus restore, 20th Anniversary.
I haven't lucked into a decent Galaga yet and I'm keeping an eye out for a Galaga 88 board.

Id like to get all the Williams Cabarets since to me they are the coolest cabarets

Missing Bubbles though... I think that will be a big ask since they only made a handful.

Or maybe trying to get one each of all the different Street Fighters.

You could live to be 100 and still not have enough time...

For me right now it's jamma Multi-carts on original hardware.

Thanks Darksoft!

:D

I have 8 capcom big blues that are basically gonna house capcom games. Majority are the SF:CE version and some are the 4p version

With the exception of one game, every pinball machine and video game I own is made by Bally or Williams.

I've done this with several themes : Pac , Mrs , Jr , Baby , Pacland , Super , Pacmania , Mr & Mrs pin ; Dig Dug , Centipede , Arabian , Kangaroo ; Robotron , Moon Patrol , Sini , Joust , Defender , ( need Bubbles ) ; DK , Jr , DK3 , Popeye ; Indiana Jones , RoadBlasters , Road Runner , Peter Packrat ; Bally's ST pin , Stern ST pin , tried to buy DE ST pin today but missed it - will eventually get the DE and the Williams STNG . I have some other stuff but that's enough for now .
