Just picked up a HH in immaculate shape from a family friend. Will probably be looking to fix it up and sell/trade it before Xmas as I don't really care for the gameplay (I'm more of a Williams DMD fan).

The machine is bone stock, with none of the mods made.

After metering all the coils, the famous cellar tube kick coil is a crispy critter and fuse F14 was blown. I've ordered a replacement from PBResource and have disconnected the lower playfield until it shows up... Upon powerup, there is no solenoid reset and the display immediately goes to all 0's (no 4 second delay, no high score alternate). I performed the Slam Switch bypass mod, and behavior is the same. Is this expected behavior with the lower PF out and F14 out, or is it possible I have other issues? I've checked all the voltages at the power supply and they are accurate.

Thanks!

How does the battery on the board look. If I recall correctly when I did my MGOW it did the same thing and I had a leaky battery.

Spoon man is right check for acid damage....

It's definitely not normal especially when you see 0's on the displays. I had a City of Gold that had a similar issue and it wound up being one of the Riot/6532's was bad... Thanks to Ed's handy dandy System 80 test fixture! (plug)

What's the condition of yours MB? Backglass and playfield?

Believe it or not, the coin lockout wire was jammed in the coinswitch ass'y... Reported to be a common problem! I thought I checked that... Thank goodness for Marvin3M, Fipllers.com, and All the other sys80 sites!

Now it does pause for 5 secs, and the high score alternates. It coins up and starts a game, albeit without sound or any coils/flippers firing. Time to keep looking! (I'm thinking the rectifiers need to be looked at)

Schusler, it is in amazing shape... The boards are all original, acid free, and very clean. The BG has some flaking in the upper left, and it looks to have been "repaired" with scotch tape :( Most of the artwork is intact though. The playfield has literally no wear, and is only a little dirty where the Mylar ends. I've only seen 2 broken plastics, one with a piece missing by the secret passage, and a crack on a cellar plastic.

Everything is pretty dusty, it has been sitting in the corner of a living room for about 25 years, but that is it... If this thing was out on a route, it wasn't for long!

What game is this on? I have a couple system 80 games and may be of help.

Very cool MB! Nice to meet a fellow denizen of Il. How far are you from Spring Hill Mall?

I recommend doing the ground mods. They are relatively quick and easy to do and can eliminate a lot of problems. Also, check all of the connectors and look for loose wires, especially check the interconnect between the MPU and the Driver board.

I brought a BH back from the dead and I feel like I know the game inside and out now. Using Marvin3M's site is extremely helpful.

Thanks for all the input so far... I've only had/repaired a few pins (Jungle King EM, Black Knight barn find, and a Hurricane), so I don't consider myself proficient by any means... Pins make cap kits and JAMMA troubleshooting look like a cakewalk. Upon further investigation, it looks like the 10A coil fuse was indeed bad, so I need to replace it with the proper 8A one. The Sound power supply is cool to the touch, so I need to look up the schematics and trace some wires. Wheeeeeee!

Something made that fuse blow if it was as slo-blo 10A. I would trace that back in the schematic and see which transistors on the driver board are associated with it.

Gottliebs are sometimes difficult to track down problems on, but at least the parts are relatively easy to repair or replace. You just have to be decent with a soldering iron.
