System 6 sound need some guidance

As I understand it, there is only 1 sound ROM, which is on the sound board. The sounds are generated using a combination of the 5 sounds.

"On System 6, using only 5 solenoids for sound limits the number sound and speech calls. Makes 2(to 5th power) = 32 so only 31 usable combinations"

No, he means......Do you have two separate ROMs.....one for each board......or do you only have one ROM......and you're swapping it from board to board (his think, the ROM could be bad....if you're using one ROM for both boards).

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.. sorry about that- yep each of the 2 sound boards has its own individual sound ROM chip. I wasn't switching one chip back and forth between the 2 boards.

I am going to check the sound ROM sockets on both sound boards this weekend, I got sidetracked last night.

OK so on the orig sound board i replaced the sound rom socket, put the sound chip back in it, and tested the game. No change. I then took the sound chip from the 2nd sound board, put it in the sound board w the new socket, and tested the game again. No change. Also wanted to note that the only synth sounds i'm hearing are when the following are hit: left kicker, right kicker, upper left standup, upper right standup, and tilt sound. All other sounds on playfield are chime-like. What do i try next?

Today's efforts:

1. resoldered some connections at the 40-pin interface
2. resoldered a leg on a transistor that did not look like it was making contact with a trace
3. replaced the 7408 chip on the driver board which controls solenoids 9-12

The result: I NOW HAVE FULL WORKING SYNTH SOUND ON TIME WARP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to all who helped in making this repair possible! Man it was a challenge but it's fixed!!! The best sound IMO is when you get a MATCH. Sirens go off!!

Thanks again.

Glade you got it fixed, good job :)

So the problems is on 7408 it think,99% sure.I told to to check these chips before, but you not listen to me:)Did you check it is it working or not?You can still taste it if you are not throw it,

I would have to think the problem was the 7408 was it as well. I can't remember why I didn't get to test it at the time you told me, I had alot of people telling me the problem sounded like it pertained to the sound board, not the driver board. It just kept bothering me that 2 separate sound boards were doing the exact same thing wrong when I installed either one, so that was leading me to believe it was on the driver board instead. After I swapped out the socket for the sound ROM and the problem was still happening I decided to take a chance with the 7408 that covered the 9-12 solenoids (all sound-related solenoids).

I can't test the 7408 now because I destroyed it getting it out of the driver board. I don't know if the other 7408 (the one that covers solenoids 13-?) needs to be swapped as well or not because from what I can tell I am getting all of the sounds that I should.

Glade you got it fixed, good job :)

Thanks Sam! Now take this info, go to Metahugh's house, fix his, and CHARGE HIM FOR IT! (kidding)

Good news are that everything is working, and the info that left with this fix.You can always test 7408 or 7402 chips(you have them on you Driver board) with DMM and it's simple, but for now when everithing is working it's not need
