I'm planning my Marble Madness restoration. I've got new side art. I'm thinking that using satin black paint will be much easier, cheaper and produce just as good of a result as vinyl.

What do other people think?

Also, what do you think of spray vs. brush? I'm thinking 4 or 5 coats of satin black spray, each sanded with fine paper, will turn out really nice (on top of a primer). I cannot see brushing resulting in as nice a coat.

Do others agree?

I look forward to your opinions and experiences!

id deffinitly paint.. just think your re-doing vinyl, why? cause it doesnt hold up after so many years.. Also priming and painting makes the wood solid and durable..

I also think the oils in the woods also break down the adhesive after so many years..

for an example, i am a tile settler, you DONT do tile over wood, why? cause the oils in the wood break down the thinset (and thats a concrete like base) that adheres the tile to the wood.. jst saying!!

I painted my system one cab, roll with a ulrtra fine foam 6" foam roller, and use spay for corners and hard to reach areas where the roller cant get... The key to a perfect finish is sand,sand,sand,.. .sand in between each coat with different guage paper.. using the highest guage for the final coat!@@

And BTB, you seal the particle board with poly before installing the vinyl. To each his own, but the original was vinyl and it really isn't that hard to install.

It's not installing vinyl that's hard. It's the fact that the cab needs to be perfect or it will show any imperfection. I think part of it has to do with the fact that the original vinyl may have been thicker than what we generally use now.

I'd definitely use vinyl, as painting it just won't look the same. Sure, you have to get the surface slick first - run a sander with 220 grit over a few times. Done..

After fixing any dings, seal with Zinsser clear sealer, dry, the sand smooth.

I'm building a replica Atari cabaret cabinet - using 3/4" birch sanded ply. I know this might sound odd, but so that it 'looks' correct I've used black vinyl on both top/bottom of the top panel and the upper and lower back pieces. Sanded ply is smooth, but I sanded it with 220 grit, wiped it down, applied the black vinyl, and it looks perfect.

Ok you vinyl people (or, obviously, anyone who wants to chime in)...

What do you do for the inside of the cabinet? There is vinyl there also. If it's peeling a bit, replacing it with vinyl would be a huge PITA (I expect). I'm referring to the small portions on the inside of the cabinet walls that are exposed (such as around the monitor).

Two coats of primer and 4 (or was it 5?) coats of satin black. Sanded with 1000 grit for the last two coats.

Did you paint with the boardset in the cabinet?

Yes, but... it was masked with a piece of cardboard.

What do you mean? You don't repaint your PCBs to be factory fresh? ;)
