I don't have a system 11 machine to look this up on, but the interconnect schematics seem to show a lot of "Insert" connectors (J11, J13, J17, etc)

What are these used for? Are they necessary?

I suppose I should start with my assumptions on the schematic, so for the switch matrix lines (top of the schematic, at least on Rollergames), from left to right:
- Iterconnect from the MPU to the connector board
- Playfield switch connector
- Cabinet switch connector (this is really just coin door right?)
- "Insert" ???

I also see some shenanigans with U1-3. I honestly can't make heads or tails of what they're trying to accomplish there since I don't know what these chips are, looks like it could be some kind of dodgy row/col sharing setup for the playfield switches, or have some role in the A/C solenoid selection.

Looks like U1-3 might be optos for sensing if the flippers have been pressed (U2-3) and ensuring the A/C relay is functional (U1)

Still not sure on the "insert" headers.

Whirlwind and some others have insert lamps under the DMD...

I had to insert a jumper on that board to make them work. The board was from another game, so it looks like it's a multi-purpose board. The one that was in the WW I had to jumper had a different serial # on it, so this is why the jumper was missing, as it was from a different game.
