syncing an lcd to paperboy, I think this warrants a new thread

ok so I got an rgb coverter or whatever you call it a couple of weeks back and had zero luck with it. sent it back and they determined it had an issue, they sent a new one. (after testing it first)

So I get this thing hooked up, and I try every possible combination of sync possibilities between paperboy's 2 sync wires and the 2 sync wires leading into the converter.

Bottom line, the only luck I have is with paperboys orange sync wire connected to the yellow sync wire that leads to the converter, but............... I MUST hold the yellow paperboy sync wire in my left hand and the grey sync wire that leads into the converter right next to (but not touching) the 2 connected wires.

I was at this for close to 3 hours messing around with every possible combination. If I remove any of the 3 wires from a firm grip in my fingers it loses sync. hold them again, sync again. It isn't perfect sync, the picture is off center slightly with a black bar along the bottom of the screen, but it looks good. Sorry about the upside down pic of the screen on this one.

Anyway, bottom line, every possible combination of connected sync wires was attempted none of them working on their own, and none of them working while in the grasp of my fingers aside from the combination mentioned above.

any ideas on how to get the bitch to work without me holding it for the rest of my life? :)

edit: if for example I move the yellow/orange connected wires to the left hand where I have the yellow paperboy sync wire, no sync. For whatever reason it likes the grey wire (which is connected to nothing but the converter and my finger) and the yellow/orange both touching the same fingers, and the yellow single sync wire from the gameboard in the opposite hand.

What converter did you use? Some only do CGA to VGA. Paperboy is EGA so you need a CGA/EGA to VGA converter

this one:

I am considering purchasing this one here:

I've had some discussions with this outfit (jammaboards.com) and they say it's top of the line, and fixes issues that the "knockoffs" (they called them) have.

Just some thoughts. Looking at the Paper Boy wiring diagram. There is a composite sync output. It looks to be pin 6 on the video output plug and would be a brown wire if it is there. try connecting it to the grey wire of the video convertor as it is the wire you use for single sync wire. - Barry

Maybe this would work as well. It is a home made sync adapter to convert h sync and v sync to composite sync. I had to do this in my RFM to install an lcd and it worked perfect. It involves a 7402 chip. +5 volts, gnd, h sync in, v sync in, composite sync output. - Barry

Ditto what timberterror said, try use the composite sync. You most likely need to add it to the harness.

Just wondering, have you set the adapter to work in separate sync mode ?

I'm not familiar with this particular model, but it looks similar to the
one on Jammaboards. The Jammaboard model switches between RGBS,
RGBHV and YUV. If you have it set on the first RGB mode, then the
separate sync connection won't work.

I've tried every wire combination possible with 4 wires. It works one way right now, the way I described and showed in pic 2. I will have to consider your option, looks good.

you know now that I think about it, it is the wire to the 2nd connector you are referring to and it is folded underneath and not used in this or the other paperboy I have. great idea I will try it tonight.

Let us know what you found out. I'm wanting to replace a 13" crt with a pc monitor due to costs involved. I've been looking at converters all day. Thanks!

Ok, using the composite sync wire (the brown unused one, in standard disco or k4900 mode) is now hooked up to the grey wire on the converter.

Looks great now.

solid picture, etc.

The only problem is that the player one score part of the screen is cut off a little bit. It's the same on my other paperboy with a med res monitor though. I think it's similar to the garbage you get on the left side of every tron screen. unless someone knows otherwise.

Funny thing is, I actually tried that brown wire the first time they sent me the converter (which was tested as bad) and it didn't occur to me to go back and try it again.
Thanks for that suggestion timberterror.

Glad it worked out.. I know down the road there will be more of these LCD conversions. If you decide to go back to the Disco I have a chasis available.

Happy to help! - Barry

yeah, thanks again, and the right side of the tron screen not the left. :)

Cga VGA card

I bought one of these cards for a Karate champ, worked great. Bought one for an APB, no dice. After trying every combination of wires, I contacted the seller of the cards(eBay seller) and asked if there was a possibility of a bad card..they sent me another card for free, no questions asked. Paperboy thread sounds very helpful, gonna try it out today on the apb!

Cool, good luck.

It basically came down to the single composite sync wire being connected tot he grey wire going to the converter. I will have to check again to see if I moved the position of hte grey wire, I did mess with it quite a bit. If you struggle I will check when I get a chance later.

On apb.. green red blue black...check
orange and yellow coming out of game vs grey and yellow coming out of converter, struggling. Tried different combinations, and moved position of grey wire. I can get the converter card menu to pop up on the monitor, nothing else. At a loss here...game plays blind still, no prob. Just not getting game signal thru the blasted card.
Help?

yeah I tried all of the combinations as well. Look at your harness that connects to the monitor chassis closely. Go down the harness from the 6 pin molex a bit and see if there is a brown (or any other color) wire that is not being used. It's just folded up and wrapped away several inches down. That's how it was on my paperboy.

That is the wire (if it exists on your harness) that connects to the grey wire from the converter.
