I'm trying to educate myself about the LM324 and its failure modes. Does anyone know the symptoms of a LM324 failure? For example?

1) does the LM324 related audio just go away?
2) does the LM324 related audio turn into noise?
3) does the LM324 related audio turn into clicking?
4) does the LM324 related audio get distorted?
5) does the LM324 related audio get amplified too much?

Per my other thread about Atari System 1 audio issues (here) I'm looking into what might be causing some audio trouble. I wanted to better understand whether the behavior I'm seeing matches an LM324 failure or whether it's likely something else.

Thanks

It can do any of the above.

Your best bet to track down audio issues is to either pick up an oscilloscope (ANY scope will work for audio, even a 1930s model) or a high impedance audio probe.

Thanks Raymond. Good info to know...

I used a very scientific approach when I found the faulty LM324 on my Centi board: I was
"fingering" around the legs of the chip and also the area around it. By touching at some areas I got some sound. Replaced it and working great ever since.

+1 on the scope. You need to "see" what's going on. For how you need to use a scope for these kinds of repairs, you don't need to fuss with most of the knobs, only a very few and a simple 10MHz scope will be fine.
