Quick question. Does a non-isolated Psu need to be behind an isolation transformer? Plugged one up and it immediately shut-off and started smoking.

Yes, live and neutral were connected to the proper terminals. Thanks!

What do you mean by 'non isolated psu'? If a regular PSU then no, they can just work direct to mains.

Likely some other problem with yours?

Was anything hooked up or on its own? Sounds like something is wrong in your wiring or less likely with your supply, the isolation transformer is for the monitor and your PSU doesn't care about it.

Can you share an image of your wiring? Will help people help you when they have a clear understanding of your situation.

I don't currently have access to the machine, as it's in storage. I'll try and get some pictures up tomorrow.

As for non-isolated switching supply, I assumed that was why ac live and ac neutral were labled as opposed to more expensive supplies that have an isolation transformer built in.

Some supplies specify hot / live and some do not. If you follow the labelling you're good. ALso, the only time I've ever smoked a supply like that (yours may be toast) is when I had a +5 mistakenly in a -5v terminal. Ooops. :)

Switching PSU does not need an isolation transformer.
